i have three large boxes of tools that have been hiding until my move recently, and they are all covered in grease, not the packing kind, but the black and gritty typed picked up in use. As most of the tools still have a long life left in them, I'd like to keep on using them but would like to clean them up to the point where the grease is minimized. consider it "cleansing" for the new apt.

how should I go about doing this in quantity? big bucket with degreaser? borrow someone's ultrasonic cleaning device?

suggestions are all welcome.

thanks

david.

Solvent is about the only option because you've got to get into the texture of the surfaces and also into all the nooks and crannies. But, enough serious degreeser solvent to do this job is not something you want to own long-term. So, look in the yellow pages and find someone who does the industrially and pay them to do it.

I have had very good luck with Gunk Engine Cleaner and hot water. Might not be cost effective in that sort of volume though. You might try giving them a good soak in a strong Simple Green solution. Car wash spray guns can be very handy too! :D

paying someone may be more costly than I'm willing to spend for used tools. I might just give the simple green soaking a try, though I don't have a spray gun, I guess I'll try using a bucket for rinse and see how that works out.

thanks

Got a pickup truck and a coin operated spray gun car wash near by? If so, soak in a tub for a couple days with the Simple Green, and then lay them out in the back of the truck and blast them, carefully, so you don't send anything flying through your back window....

I don't know how safe it is to soak anything rubber / squishy synthetic handled in Simple Green a long time, so read the bottle and keep an eye on them if you do try it. I mainly just use it for all steel stuff, or things like screwdrivers with hard plastic handles.

There is a handgun cleaner that comes in a one and 5 gallon bucket. Just drop it in there soak and give your weapon a light scrub. Bet it would work for your tools too but the name escapes me.
