I would like to thank Gunknifenut for hosting a camping trip this weekend on private land. I would also like to thank him for shooting down my idea of doing it during the week. Hell we have only had bright sunny days with temps well over 50 degrees the last few days. What kind of winter camping is that:rolleyes:

Instead we get to do our minimalist trip tomorrow with temps below 20F, and a lovely breezy day. yay

WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM SATURDAY TO 2 AM EST SUNDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TAUNTON HAS ISSUED A WIND ADVISORY... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 8 AM SATURDAY TO 2 AM EST SUNDAY.

* LOCATIONS... ALL OF CONNECTICUT... RHODE ISLAND... MASSACHUSETTS AND SOUTHWEST NEW HAMPSHIRE.

* WINDS... NORTHWEST WINDS 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 50 MPH.

* TIMING... STRONG WINDS WILL COMMENCE SHORTLY AFTER SUNRISE SATURDAY AND CONTINUE INTO SATURDAY NIGHT.

* IMPACTS... STRONG WINDS WILL BE CAPABLE OF DOWNING SMALL TREE LIMBS AND BRANCHES... POSSIBLY CAUSING ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES. DRIVING CAN ALSO BE DIFFICULT... ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES.

I will finally be able to tell you guys if a tree makes any noise if it falls in the woods. That's if you can hear it over my high pitched screams....

It will be interesting to know if a tree makes any noise if it falls in the woods.
Just make sure not to make a high profile shelter, it might make for difficult sleeping.

Most of all though, have fun. A little wind never hurt anyone, did it?

Remember, to take a lot of pictures, then post them up as soon as you return.

As you slowly freeze in the 20 degree weather, remember that I am enjoying
70 degree weather, a warm sun, and a gentle breeze. It will warm you up.
Ahhhh, I think I might go enjoy the day in my shorts and T-shirt.

Hell it's 64 here today, I'l loving it!

It's not so much the cold temps that bother me, it's the below freezing temps combo'd with the rain the area is getting today. Then the high winds make for some sketchy conditions..

I have no clue about the area we are going to, so I don't know if we will find any natural wind breaks or not. Frozen tree branches getting hit with 35+ mph winds aren't fun. It will be an interesting trip.. I think we will have a great time regardless, and I am looking forward to it.

You're doing it this weekend and I'm headed to the Pulaski for steelhead fishing. WTF. Too bad I can't be in 2 places at once.

Your Welcome! Yah big sissy! We are gonna be fine...I am going to skip the big meal I was going to cook for everyone, keeping the dutch oven warm in those conditions would be a lot of work. So, its everyman for himself I guess! Looks like its Beef Jerky and BEER for me...I dont know about you guys:D

Good luck tony. Only time I camped with 50mph winds was in Wyoming at around 11Kft, so we didn't have to worry about icy trees falling on us.

However, having helped a friend track a wounded/downed deer during an ice storm, I can safely say trees do indeed make noise when they fall down

Take care where you set up, keep a nice big fire going, and have fun!

Marty told me about the fishing trip, and I was close to calling Gene and saying "I can't make it" :D

Have a blast Kev!

Thanks RB:thumbup:

Man, who you talkin about willis? I think I aged a bit since we used to run around Doc, now I am just stronger than a 5th grader!:D

Tony, I am my womans bitch, but thats were it ends...period. Anyone who would give birth to my spawn, deserves the respect!
Seriously, unless we work our ass's off, I dont think we can get the oven hot enough to finish the food. I think we should go with light and easy food..yah know, regular stuff.
Besides, Leinenkugal is towing up a keg, so what do I need to cook for???

You should be fine - all the big stuff came down in the ice-storm of '08. Roughly where in Mass? I live in central Mass. Lost a lot of snow the last few days. Enjoy

-kk

It's all fun and games until you have a serious conversation about just how much colder it gets before you have to resort to mansnuggling.

We survived, and it went very well. I had a good time, every one was a lot of fun to hang with. It was really good to see Tony and Marcelo again, it had been 2 years for me.
It was pretty COLD, around 3 degrees at dawn, plus the wind chill, sustained winds of around 30+ MPH.
We selected a great spot, very little wind, due to location and some wind breaks we erected.
The long bed fire worked really well.
I liked my gear, everything functioned well. This was my first time using USGI Micky Mouse boots, they worked great, my feet NEVER got cold at all! Also the USGI Bear coat fleece, very warm jacket.
My sleeping bag was the USGI gortex bivy with summer and mid weight bags combined..I was very warm, and slept ok. My back was hurting by morning, mostly due to my sleeping wrong I think. I really like my Therma Rest air pad, it does well for what it is. I carried everything in with my SnugPak Bergen.

I brought my Becker BK9, Cold Steel Recon Scout , Mora 510, Kellam wolverine, and my leatherman wave. Also, I carried a pocket chain saw, folding buck saw and Gransfurs Bruks Scandi forest Axe. The Axe and Buck Saw were king!!! I liked Tony's Junglas, and Marcelo's Condor Double bit axe..that was a cool axe, well worth the money!!!
I got to hold Rick Marchands entry to the bushcraft challenge...its one serious knife..I love it. Basically, I will steal it from CT soon!!!
