I recieved my Spyderco Massad Ayoob today from NG (fastest ive ever gotten a knife in the mail. 2days. gotta love the post office's flat rate shipping). After I held off as long as I could I tore into the box. Pulled out the knife, but the spydie box in the safe and preceded to destroy the box it came in haha.
The knife came along with me to the skatepark and cruised around with me. The response of my friends at the park: thats gnarly/ let me hold it/ omg it feels so good in my hand. Ppl looking at it were certainly put off but if they could be talked into holding it they came around. The think looks like some sort of claw in hand.
Later on back on the farm wondering around in the woods I decided to see how well it would carve a spear. So I found appropriate sticks and went to town on the wood.
The knife takes getting used to. it is a radical shape and this simple carving task felt a little alien. but after a few minutes i had 4 sticks with pointy ends. and the ayoob did it. Was it the best tool for the job? no. Did it do a very good job? yes. There was one moment where I felt some vertical bladeplay locked up, felt the blade get pushed upwards as it bit very deepy into the wood. the bladeplay is within tolerances (at least for me, especially while pushing it into a role that it was not meant to feel)
The only other snag was when it came time to make diner.
Task: chopping potatoes, slicing tomatoes
When chopping up potatoes i felt almost a resistance from the blade. it did it but it wasnt the cutting experience i was expecting. So i switched to my opinel numba 6 which glid thru like nothing was even there. Tomatoes sliced well though we use large slices around here. The ayoob is not a kitchen knife. It will do it but the blade stock is too thick for it to excel like the french standard did.
I usually team my larger folders with a smaller slipjoint. My Spyderco Gayle Bradley and case ss peanut has been my favorite combo to date. But being a fair man like I am Iv decided to carry my opinel#6 with the Massad for atleast a week.
I will post an updated review sometime this weekend most likely.
