Maybe I missed it but I couldn’t find a good thread regarding this knife. A few searchs only returned short threads with no real info. There is one going on the Gent.

I’ve got Falcons from both the original run and the more recent Falcon Wing run. Both are pretty nice little knives, especially for the price. Each opens easily via the flipper or thumb hole. Fit/finish are good. They are smaller knives but the ergonomics are good for my medium-sized hands. I’m not nuts about the pocket clips on them though.

I admit that I haven’t carried or used them so I don’t know how well they do with actual use.

How do others like them? Are they good users?

I think the bronze Falcon Wing is a particularly good-looking knife.

I might prefer the Massdrop logo on the original though. I know it’s not easy to see in the photo.

Not a fan. Gave it to a friend. Better knives for the price imho. Haven't tried a gent but everyone raves about it.

It did not fit my hands well. If it did, I probably would have kept it, not sure. I have another WE knife and it is awesome.
All my FFKW knives are amazing, but this is not one of their blades. WE does make good knives though.

I could see it not fitting everyone well.
The only real Ferrum Forge I’ve handled is my Pretium and it’s very nice. I really wanted a Master Blaster but I’ve pretty much stopped buying stuff in that price range.

My absolute favorite is the Fortis. Fits my hands better than any knife I've had. Archbishop is right behind it. Those 2 are in my top 5 folders for sure, for EDC. But yeah, the Falcon just did not fit my hands well. I think the "Gent" would though.

The Falcon is a great knife is you have small hands.
My hands are just too large for it.
I'll probably pass it on to someone.

Have not purchased one but looks like a decent blade if it didn't have all the branding on it.

People have been saying this since images of the knife were first released and I’ve never understood it. Let’s compare the Falcon to some other knives and see how the billboarding looks. I chose most of these because like the Falcon they were design collaborations, with the exception of the Hinderer.

We can see here that the Falcon is the only knife with a sterile presentation side.

The reverse side markings of the knives are very comparable and I’d say the Falcon markings are pretty subdued.

Let’s quantify by counting the individual markings on blade, scales, and clip of each example (marker, designer, blade steel, country of origin, serial number, model, patent info):
  • Boker = 4 not counting “First Production” and “451 of 500” separately
  • Hinderer = 4
  • ZT = 8 (infamous for billboarding)
  • Falcon = 4
  • Spyderco = 5
  • Benchmade = 7 if you count “Benchmade” and “USA” separately on the blade and clip, 5 if not
So the Falcon has only as many markings as those others with the fewest and less markings than half of the other examples have.

Let’s talk about the markings that don’t appear. Three entities brought this knife to market: Ferrum Forge designed it, WE built it, and Massdrop solely marketed & distributed it. WE has no markings on the knife or the packaging which I found odd. This is billboarding that could have appeared on the knife but does not.

There are certainly more sterile knives like Chris Reeve or Les George but the Falcon is not a huge departure from industry norms. This is why I don’t understand all the chatter over it. Is it because Massdrop tagged it? What difference does it make? I can see not liking the size, blade shape, handle shape, etc. but the markings seem like a non-issue.

Check out the falcon’s big brother the Massdrop Ferrum Forge Buc. I think it has not been released yet though.

I saw that and have considered it. The design reminds me of a Graham Razel without the sharpened front edge.

Justify it however you want...
I'm never gonna buy a knife that says "massdrop" on the blade (or anywhere else).

It's a logo that's completely unnecessary in my opinion.

It’s a logo that you can’t easily explain to your buddies when you whip your expensive knife out to show off and people ohhhhh and ahhhh because they recognize the logo is pretty much the real reason when people mention the mass drop logo.

I’m not justifying; I didn’t have anything to do with making the knife so I don’t need to. I’m just trying to understand the issue. Since it is the Massdrop logo that’s the trigger let me ask a couple of follow-up questions:
  • If Massdrop sold what you would consider to be your perfect knife at a good price, you would refuse to buy it if a Massdrop logo was present?
  • Does this apply only to Massdrop or to other retailers as well? For instance, Cabela’s has some Benchmade exclusives. If you otherwise liked the knife would you refuse to buy it with a Cabela’s logo?

I guess I can see that, assuming anyone cared enough to ask about it.

I have an emotional connection to Cabela's. I have 0 emotional connection to md. Spending the kind of money we do on a blade, we get to be selective on our tastes.

It would be nice if md finally took the plunge to take all the profit they have made from the free advertising on the forum and joined as vendor, which they are as they don't make the knives, they just sell the knives. Looks like they turned down the opportunity however....

Knowing that Elliot Williamson is a tool turns me off from wanting to buy any of his knives. I have a much easier time believing he's the guy he comes across as in the private conversation with a customer that came out than I do in believing the public apology he made for PR damage-reduction purposes.

The massdrop logo is pointless and totally unnecessary. They don't make, design, or have anything to do with any of the knives they sell beyond that they sell them. There are piles of dealer exclusive versions of knives that don't have that vendor's name pointlessly splashed on them--I hope massdrop doesn't start a hideous trend. How many logos can we add if we work at it? Here's the designer's logo. Here's the Chinese production company's logo. Here's the massdrop logo because they ordered three hundred knives from the maker. Here's the USPS logo because they delivered it. Here's Bob your mailman's signature by the ricasso because he put it in your mailbox. This shop-that-sold-it logo thing needs to not become a trend.

I don't like the massdrop name on the knives that much either. But without Massdrop, none of these collabs would have existed.

I have a Buc and a terzoula CTF that are shipping later this year.

Honestly, the logo was hardly noticeable on both my falcon and my crux. I don't get why people make such a big deal about it, but thankfully we all have choices to just not buy whatever we don't like.

Sure, I don't have an emotional connection to Massdrop. But the knives themselves were functionally great and I didn't once think about the logo when I was using them. It also doesn't bother me when ZT billboards all over their knives or when Benchmade lists a web URL on their blades, so YMMV.
