Review Massive review: Boker GoBag and Manly Patriot

So I got the knives.

Manly Patriot came razor sharp. Fit and finish are exceptional, except for grind not going all the way to the tip. And notch at the end of the blade is quite cornered as you can see. I tried to sand paper it quickly - no luck. I plan to round it with diamonds as this is potential hotspot that could cause the knife to break.

Handle has good ergonomics, jimping isn't too agressive, blade is ground very thin, definitley a slicer.
They however forgot to make a drain hole on the sheath... but it'll be in my pocket, so it's not a big deal.

Now, Boker GoBag... came dirty and one of the handle scales is bit thicker than other.
And grind...

It feels good in the hand tho, sheath was at first too tight, but after a while and lots of shavings being made by thick bottom at the blade of the knife - now it sits perfectly.

About the steel:
It was amazing how the Manly Patriot resisted sand paper, even diamonds when I convexed the grind near the tip (I plan to convex it's entire edge in the future sharpenings).
And it was much easier to "fix" the grind on Boker GoBag.
I did all that by hand - manually. I own no machines or sharpening systems.

#600 diamond sharpener + diamond polishing paste and it's shaving sharp.

I plan to do edge retention tests with them in the future too. I expect that Patriot will have better edge retention than GoBag.
So, expect "D2 vs D2" thread in the future.

Sorry for the long post, I hope you enjoyed to read :)

Thanks for the initial review, but... How do they cut?
Patriot is not just shaving sharp but also can slice an apple despite 4mm thickness. Definitley a slicer. They both perform similar on meat, but Patriot seems to pass with less resistance.

It cuts better than Boker GoBag. Neither of them gave me any hotspots during use.
With patriot I have better control, handle is more comfy and really fills my hand nicley. GoBag is much easier to conceal though.

Do you think it is a good idea to do some light chopping with them? For hypothetical self defense scenario. It will hopefully never happen but if it does - that would be the worst possible time to find out your blade is brittle.

d2 just doesn't have the composition to be reliable at chopping without fail... the carbon and carbides are just too high

you want aeb-l or 12c27 or 1075 or cpm3v for that type of hard use

look at any of @Larrin website for charpy results : ) d2 is a trade off, high edge retention but relatively brittle (which some people like as it's said to give more jagged wear profile - like automatic micro serrations)

nice work

nice work
Thank you :D

So, Esee3 remains go to for such tasks? :D

Edit: Maybe he should get Pendleton or Mini Pendleton in 3V.

I remember I actually did look into that site in the past.

But I still think D2 could handle the self defense scenario. Manly Patriot is ground thin which makes me scared of chipping. I saw some older threads and videos of people batoning D2. I would never do that and it's not scientific but it gives me some confidence.
These knives are utility knives.
I like the corrosion resistance and edge retention they have.
And I still find them easier to sharpen than I expected it'd be. But at the same time I'm amazed how much better it resists diamond than plain carbon steel.

So far, I love D2.
Thank you :D

Like yours that never arrived? :D
Bit costly to me but tempting.

And yes, Esee 3 is easy to resharpen and very tough, decent EDC option too for winter months.

I guess 3V Pendleton would have all desired properties of D2 with plenty of toughness added.
But, I'd still prefer plain carbon for prolonged staying in nature, because of the ease of sharpening.
Also, feel free to post the pics for me, and answer the whatsapp.
D2 is 'toothy' to me. It works really well on loose material.
I definitley noticed it, and I'm a fan.
I also put more coarse edge on my 3V and stropped it to make it shaving sharp while still coarse.
I plan to keep doing the same to D2.
