ok maybe some of the regulars here know where i need to look .

long story short , i want to get a mammoth or mas scaled folder . its for a man i knew all my life and we grew up in diapers together , and im now 51 . it can be either production or custom . i know a custom might not be feasable this close to holidays .

he has fallen on hard times , and loves knives , he has sold off alot of knives and he like mammoth slab knives . only folders . i want to get him one he does not have to sell.

his wife left him for someone 25 years younger , took about everything , went bankrupt , has a grown dirt bag son on meth who steals from him . and i just want to give him alittle piece of joy . price is open . i told him i want him to spend christmas with us .

Search for Ilian Dimitrov or Ilio knives.
I think he makes custom folders with those.

Edit: He is a member here @ilio.

If you're not advised to it, I'd also check with second hand dealers like Nordic Knives and Arizona Custom Knives. The various ivory bans, etc.... have caused some collectors to sell, lots of nice minty older examples popping up.

Search under both mastodon and mammoth.

How about this guy?

$336 at knifecenter.

I have a similar one of these made in Japan for Browning knives, but mine is in mother of pearl and the knife is actually very nicely made.

Alternately, and for literally thousands of dollars more, William Henry currently has some mammoth models.

I have nothing to add about where to find a knife like this but I just want to say a big "thank you" for kind and generous act for a life, long friend. Well done Sir. :)

I would see what alan davis has coming out in the near future. sometimes he has knives that just need "finishing" touches like scales and file work.
If you dont find anything PM me, I might be able to help. That is really thoughtful...

Brad Zinker makes and has some mammoth ivory knives for sale.

They can be tough to find, but there’s a few Northwood models that use Mammoth Ivory. The Fremont Jack sticks out to me right now. If you look around I’d bet you could find one in time.

Here’s a picture I stole of someone else’s, haha.

Did you do a search on the bay? Just checked, there’s some pretty cool stuff on there.
(Be sure to change the settings to “all categories”)

Cool thanks folks I'm checking all of it out. This means alot to me again thanks. Also I don't know why I didn't think to check the bay

Really genuine, kind thing to do for a friend. Kudos to you sir. Good luck with your search.

Be very careful in that snakepit. Frauds abound there. That’s the second-to-last place in the world that I’d buy a knife alleged to be mammoth or mastodon ivory scaled. IMO the only place in the entire world that’s even worse is the twin Alibaba snakepits.

Dennis Bradley of www.dennisbradley.com made me a nice custom lockback with mammoth scales. It's similar to a Buck 112 in size, but better in the hand and a better lockback design with the spring integral to the rear bolster. It's in 440c, but that's OK with me, it's pretty hard, 61 Rc I think. He's experienced, former high school metal work teacher. His scales are from Turnage and also stabilized by him. I treat my knife rough and it holds up.

I actually like the way that looks, the only negative is it's browning... which has always been fairly questionable on f&f and quality (at least from what I've seen) ...
correct me if my info is out of date or wrong?

As I mentioned previously:

Whoever they have making these in Japan did a nice job on mine. It's not like those $10 gun brand cheapies you find in a sporting goods store, where they've slapped their logo on some gas station knife.

I'll take a photo of my mother of pearl (very similar to the one I linked) one tomorrow for you.

Here's a photo from kc for now:

thanks, I was hoping that was the case...
this is where browning could learn a thing about marketing from spyderco... when they wanted a really low end knife line, they called the company byrd to separate themselves

... ironically, they probably didn't need to do that, as byrd got a pretty good rep for quality at a low price

(also, is the logo really completely cut out??? *sigh* I might have got it if it was etched or laser engraved or even stamped... I don't like that it's a cut out)

Yup, it's cut through. It's also tip-down only, those are my only real grievances with it, to be honest. Photographing mother of pearl is a giant pain, but I'll accept that because I love the way it looks . . .

I said I'd post some photos of mine. I think it's the same model, just a different variant. The mother of pearl is hard to capture, so don't mind the odd wonky angle in an attempt to show off the colors:
