Mastadon overlay?

Hey all, I just got my first Sebenza today. It is a small that has been customized with a mastadon overlay ( Africa appropriate), and an anodized clip. It is a beautiful knife and beautifully constructed. But I have some questions, and figured that this is the place to ask.

First, how much is a customized small Sebenza worth? I know this is tough to answer, but ballpark? It is dated April 14, 1997, and is in like new condition. I'm almost scared to carry it, and wonder if I may trade it for a user Seb and something else.It really seems more like a collector's item than a user.

Second, It is pretty stiff. Should I order some of CRK lube or do you all rec. something else?

Thanks in advance. I have learned alot from you guys already. Josh

Josh,

Welcome to the Forums! To answer your question, the best bet is to send an e-mail to or call Chris Reeve Knives directly. They will be the best people to tell you what its value is. As far as it being stiff and if you are daring enough you can disassemble it and apply the Flourinated Grease that CRK uses and recommends. I use it and I like it better than anything else I have tried. If taking it apart scares you then send it to CRK for a tune up. It shouldn't cost much at all if anything to get it back into top shape.

CRK's fluorinated grease is excellent if you are taking the knife apart. I've found White Lightening to be very good if you wish to leave the knife together. It transformed the action on my Small Classic. I prefer it to anything else I've tried for this application.

Newknifeguy, e-mail me a picture and I'll post it for you. I'd love to see it!

Hey Newknifeguy, here's your picture. I cleaned it up a little and combined the two, hope you don't mind.

I don't think this is a Chris Reeve factory job but it looks to be very well done, I like it a lot! :)

I have been meaning to try something like this with a Small Classic I have...

Much much much better picture,

Now this knife is absolutely beautiful IMO.

He also mentioned that the Matadon plug in the hole is no loger there, it was just for show.

I believe that was the exact Sebbie I was considering in a trade a while ago. I didn't bite because it was an overlay and had holes drilled into scale. I was also worried that the ivory would crack and leave me with two broken pieces of ivory and a Sebenza with two screw holes in it. But it may work out fine for you.

Aren't we just a ray of sunshine

Tell that to Bob Terzoula who uses Mastadon overlay all of the time and get's $550+ for his knives..

Many people use mastadon overlays without problems - I've got a very nice piece by Reese Weiland. :) Don't know how it would hold up under use, 'cause mine sits in the case - that's pretty much how I feel about the material though - looks great, don't want to damage it. :)

If my post sounded negative its because of the overall opinion that I received on this forum regarding the same knife. If I recall correctly, the consensus was to avoid it if it was to be a user. I didn't mean anything by it, but its just that I wanted share info about what I knew about the knife.
