Master Don Knives?

The knife in the attached scan is marked G. Smyth. I believe that it was made by the same maker as several "Master Don" marked knives that I obtained nine years ago. All three knives are less than one half the thickness of most custom or production knives of a similar style and length (this one is approximately 1/8" thick). The person who sold me the first two knives demonstrated them to me in a unique way. He dropped the knives point down on to the concrete floor of the gun and knife show auditorium. No point damage but the concrete chipped. Next he used one of the knives to cut the surface of a steel pipe supporting the seating stands behind our tables. The last demonstration involved using one of the Master Don knives to peel metal from the back edge of a well used Buck 110 folder. I would like to hear from anyone with information concerning Master Don or G. Smyth.
Thanks, Bubba

My brother bought a master Don knife here in Kansas several years ago. At the time I think he was located in the Hutchinson, Ks. area. It was a small knife, skinner pattern. I was skinning alot of coyotes at the time so I borrowed it from him for a spell. It was incredibly dificult to sharpen and didn't hold an edge that well in my opinion. It was made from pretty thick stock and was flat ground. I have a feeling the way it was ground had alot to do with it's resistance to sharpening. Anyway, supposedly it was made from some secret steele and there was also a great deal of secrecy about the maker. I.E. nobody knew his name, exact location, etc. I also talked to a dealer at a show who claimed that he had been taken to the cleaners by master Don on a knife deal and was trying to locate him. I have not heard any thing else about him for a number of years and that is the extent of my knowledge as regards master Don.
Good luck.

Don,
Thanks for the info. I heard the same story about Master Don knives being made from some "super steel". They ARE very hard to sharpen, however, I have had good luck producing a razor edge on them with both the DMT sharpeners and the Spyderco Tri-Angle set.
