Master Knives?

In the "John Locke's Knives" thread, I noticed several "Master" brand knives. This called to mind a three bladed Master knife that someone gave me for christmas several years ago.

What's the skinny on Master Knives? Who makes them, what's the quality like, what steels are used? As far as I remember, the knife I received had fairly good fit and finish, but I'm not sure about the steel...

Thanks for any help.

Master Cutlery generally produces a very low cost product. Their steel of choice is going to be some type of 420J2 or 440. The 420J2 will not hold an edge for very long and the 440 heat treats will not be up to par for that type of steel. Among most members here the quality is probably considered to be from "A good cheap beater knife" to "Master Cutlery is total Chinese crap". If you like it then it is good. Just remember that with knives of this type you get what you pay for.

That's sorta what I figured...but I didn't pay anything for it, so I guess I got the better end of that deal...:D

Thanks
