I just recieved this this book from Paladin. It was written by Richard Ryan, who was one of Gunsite's instructors. I haven't had time to read all of it, but from what I've seen it's worth getting. Ryan even discusses prehistoric man's use of obsidian knives, and some of the pictures show a "trick" knife cutting target areas on arms, etc. Paladin just released the book, and I highly recommend it.

I don't know what the difference is between Orange and Grey, the book just says Firearms Instructor at Gunsite. He evidently did the knife videos for them as well (which I haven't seen).

Ryan did Vol. 1 for Gunsite.

Guro Steve Tarani of the West Coast Academy did Vol. 2 of Edged Weapons for Gunsite.

I have the Gunsight cane tape by Tarani and I thought it was too 'dojo,' too martial artsy for seniors who won't practice and don't have a martial arts background. A lot looked ineffective against a real attack, imnsho. I hope the knife vid. doesn't fit this category...

The difference ... Gunsite was founded by Jeff Cooper. After building up a tremendous reputation for the place he decided to retire due to his advanced age and Richard Gere bought Gunsite (well ... he acquired it. Let's not get into whether he paid.) Since Richard Gere took over Gunsite the instruction, and its reputation, has ... um ... changed.

Because Jeff Cooper flew a flag everywhere on the premises that was predominantly orange, and Richard Gere replaced that with a flag that is predominantly grey, the old and new are now known as Orange Gunsite and Grey Gunsite.

A mere graduate of Orange Gunsite has a certain prestige, and instructors at Orange Gunsite were very well qualified. The question is at what time was the author an instructor?

I don't remember the date of the changeover, but I can find that out.

I would not assume an instructor at Grey Gunsite wasn't competent, but it would not be generally considered a very impressive qualification by itself.

You could learn more about it by reading Jeff Cooper's Commentaries at http://www.concentric.net/~mkeithr/jeff/index.html -- you'll have to read a lot of other stuff to find the information about the changeover, but the other stuff is much more interesting anyway.

Everyone who has any interest in pistolcraft and riflecraft, or even if you're only interested in mindset and tactics, will find the Commentaries rewarding reading.

Mr. Ryan was the Edged Weapons instructor at Gunsite Training Center, but to the best of my knowledge, was not officially a Gunsite Rangemaster (running his own firearms classes.) I could be mistaken.

About two years ago, Mr. Ryan was supplanted by Mr. Steve Tarani, a certified instructor in the Inosanto Method, LAMECO Eskrima, Bahala Escrima, Mande Muda Pentcak Silat, and Muay Thai Boxing Association USA.

In response to Sochin, I was involved with the filming of the Gunsite defensive cane video, and much of the content was geared towards what Mr. Jee wanted/expected to be in the video.

The EW2 video is much more real-world, and deals with very basic concepts such as triangle footwork, feeding angles, training methods, meet/follow concepts, and proper mindset. It is a departure from the EW1 curriculum.

How much information does Mr. Ryan

provide on the subject of knife vs.

firearm?

Ryan goes into knife vs. gun a little bit, but it doesn't have it's own chapter or anything. His book is divided into concepts, much of can be used empty-hand or with a weapon. He talks about when a gun is appropriate and when one should just use a knife.
