Help me decide. I want a knife to replace my cold steel master hunter.Should I try to get a hold of a master series over run with bg-42 steel or get alaskan guide with vangaurd with sv30.Also if I go with the alaskan do I get rubber or wood handel. It will be a hunting knife and used hard.Any suggestions guys. Thanks in advance

If you go with the Alpha folder Alaskan, you can get rubber handles for it. I just bought a pair off ebay for my alpha that has the rosewood handles.

I went with an Alaskan Vanguard fixed blade with the rubber handles along with an Alaskan 110 for my user hunting knives. They both were awesome in performance this past deer season. The Vanguard also comes in the plain blade minus the guthook, which is what I ordered. The rubber on the Vanguard was excellent for not slipping.

the master series vanguards are really hard to find if I remember they were only 91 made and I found two for my sons Chrismas present a few years ago.it took me at least 6 months to find the second one.
that said I have the alaskan guide vanguard from cabela's and I prefer the green handle overrun. its one of the best looking knives I've ever seen.
its also pretty rare but both are great knives.
to answer your question about handles.I prefer the smooth wood handles myself but the rubber handled vanguards offer a really secure grip.

Gault,,,

I am not up on the Master Series knives. Don't understand the overrun bits.

I have a green handeled Vanguard Master Series in BG42 that has the Buck 192MSU (1998) U.S.A. stamp with the Master Series BG42 stamped on the reverse side.

Is this the one you are saying that they only made 91 of? Which is this versus the overruns.

And I agree on the wooden handles. They are so much nicer but not as user friendly as the rubber. Wife wouldn't let me use the Alaskan wooden handeled one as a user (too purty), so got the rubber handeled one.

LFH,sorry for the confusion I meant there were only 91 of the master series over run vanguards with BG 42 steel if I remember correctly.
they were made with smooth green wood handles.
I believe there were more made of the original master series vanguards.
I have the article printed some where if I can find it.
sorry for the confusion.

No Problem,,,

I am the one confused, simply because I haven't studied up on the Vanguards much. Thanks for the info. Sounds like a research project! :D :D

How do the steels compare as far as edge holding and toughnes and sharpening

I have two Buck BG-42 blades (501 Master Series and a 112 re-blade) and two Buck S30V blades (Mayo and Alaskan Guide Crosslock). My limited experience is that the BG-42 may have a slight advantage in edgeholding, and I find the S30V to be a little easier to sharpen. But they are very close, and you would probably not notice the difference in regular use.

I don't have any real feeling for how they compare in toughness.

BG42 vs S30V........ Too close to call!!! Go with the knife that trips your trigger!! ;)
