Master Tanto steel?

Can anyone tell me what steels are in the San Mai Tanto from the mid 80's? That's what I have, and when I bought it. Thanks.

The actual San Mai Master Tanto from the 80's was an AUS8A core with 420 outer layers. If its not a San Mai model, the regular Master Tantos from 1981-1992 were all "400 series stainless" which most believe was basically AUS8A.

That is correct. If it doesn't state VG-1 San Mai III, it has an AUS8A core.
