I have just purchased a new Masters of Defense 685 small tactical with a plain edge spearpoint blade. What do you guys think of this manufacturer? I want to use it for everyday carry (its the right size for this in the UK). Do you all think its a good knife?

I had a James Keating Hornet some years ago, before BlackHawk group bought out MOD. It was a very good knife, I liked it alot.

MOD is a good company that makes great knives, with an outstanding warrantee and decent customer service. You can't go wrong with one of their products.

However, it has to be said that if all you want is a utility knife, there are other companies that make more inexpensive knives that will serve the same utility purposes that a MOD can.

Spyderco, for example, makes excellent blades, reasonably priced.

The premise of MOD is to build purpose-designed knives according to the specifications of prominent experts in martial arts and close-quarters tactics. Hence the company's name.

You (theoretically at the very least) pay more for a MOD because more thought and engineering went into building a knife that is both a well-designed tool and also (primarily, some might say) a well-designed weapon.

I own two old school MOD's. A Tempest and a Trident. Excellant desgins and knives. On a par with my SOCOM. I also own a CQD MrkII and am not sold on the knife yet. I am finding the edge way to thick to get near as sharp as my other 2. But I am working on it. I have a call into Blackhawk concerning this so am awaiting an answer. I think overall MOD's are very good knives for the money not withstanding my exeperiene with the M II. keepem sharp

I also have a MOD CQD MarkII. Its a great knife, but it had to go back to the manf twice in 4 months. The first time, it went in for some minor horizonal blade play. It was covered under warrenty. The 2nd time (last week) it was sent back off for HORRIBLE vertical/horizontal blade play.

Mike Janich (brand manager) personally called me to resolve this problem. I sent it back to them VIA FedEx Overnight on MOD's account number and Mike couldnt figure out the problem. He said that it had somthing he had never seen before. So he basically gave me a brand new knife (except he kept the blade from my old one and threw it onto the handels of a new one). When can you say you have seen a company give you a brand new product? Than, he overnight shipped it to my door along with a Free DVD. Martial Blade Concepts, which is of him teaching a crash course in Defensive Knife tactics.

I'm actually afraid to carry the knife as an EDC because im afraid that there would be more problems with blade play. The fact that it had to go back twice makes me want to stay away from the comapny. On the flip side, if the Brand Manager would persoanly call me and than take care of ALL my problems even cost of shipping, that speaks ALOT for the comapny. I think MOD is a great brand, and Im just hopping that I somehow got a Lemon of their products.

As far as getting the knife sharp, I'm having the same problem on getting it sharp on my 204Sharpmaker as well. I found the trick is to use it on the 30 setting and than strop it real good. It isn't as sharp as when it came from the factory, but it can still shave.

For the price, I agree that there are alot of other good brands out there. IE BM, Spyderco etc. I feel that when you pay for the MOD you are paying for the name and the cool features it has. Don't get me wrong, the tungsten carbide glass breaker is one of the coolest features I have ever seen as well as the Wing Walk inserts.(Those things are SO darn grippy). IF you can spare the cash, I say get one, you shouldnt have any problems. If you do, you know that the comapny will take care of you!

Does anyone own or have experience of the MOD 685. I am curious how it performs over time as an every day carry?

I have quite a few MOD knives & I love'm all. I used to carry a Benchmade mini-stryker & that is what my 685 reminds me of...only with a better look - at least I think. I'm biased though. You can't go wrong with a MOD period.
