Masting Axe

I believe this is a masting axe and it looks like someone did some grinding so I can’t figure out the maker? Maybe … New Haven, CT and Cast Steel Warranted.

Curious,what makes it a "masting axe" I have a hatchet that resembles it but is flat on one side similar to a broad/hewing axe.

Good question! Not sure what makes it a Hewing axe or a Masting axe? I suppose, the shape of the axe.

A masting axe is a basic hewing axe. It would have been used not just for masts but for any other ship or barn timber. Most are double beveled but some are single beveled. Mostly used in the shipyard. But also kept on board a ship. In a pinch a de-masted ship's crew could fell, limb and hew a new mast with just this tool.
