All,

Where do you buy your mastodon ivory, and how much does it cost? I am considering buying 2 pairs of slabs (i.e., 4 slabs) for full tang large knives (white, not bark.)

Thanks,

JD

If you want white color why not use Elephant ivory? Do a search on ebay and you can find slabs for sale, good prices too. I buy from a guy named David Warther, he sells all the ivory for randall knives. He is cutting up old tusks that belonged to a museum in ohio.

The Warther family has been making knives since WWII, or before. They are still doing it. The Museum is the Warther knife Museum, IIRC.

I use elephant ivory from David Warther and highly recommend him. He includes the proper paper with pre-ban ivory. He will cut the pieces to your sizes. I have made some good buys from him on ebay also.

Joss It was nice meeting you at The NWKC show again.

I use www.coastivory.com do any of you know if the prices are good or bad here please let me know. I'll have to try Warther now..thanks for the number Mike. do they have a web site to see what your getting? one thing I like about coastivory your getting what your looking at. but I'm not sure if the pricing is good or not now? I need to look around I geuss.

Joss,
I have had real good luck and pricing from Tim Balda owner of
www.ivoryworksltd.com for interior cut Woolly Mammoth... creamy color and Tim will try to match the paired pieces up as close as possible.

He also has exterior or bark ivory,
but if you are into some knock-em-dead gorgeous blue Bark Ivory, Don Fields (phone 386-532-9070..e-mail..Donaldbfields@aol.com) just sent me a shipment that had nothing in it that I could possibly want to return...just plain beautiful blues, a couple of grays, some brown marking on a few, as requested....not cheap but worth every dollar!

It is worth getting the ivory stabalized...especially interior cut is pretty "lively" if you don't. Also DON'T use water to dip the stuff when you grind it unless you want to have to flatten it after you grind it..just use sharp belts and a light pressure, and a relatively slow speed if you have a variable speed grinder and don't let it get hot...as one of my Mentors, and good buddy, A.T. Barr says, "Speed Kills!"...I guarantee that to be true working with ivory.

Stay Safe,

Try Sergei at www.artportberlin.com he buys large quantities directly in Russia and exports all over, also does several gem shows in the USA each year. He speaks englics, german and russian and is an honest guy. If you like Netsukes, his are also top quality, I did the photos for his website.

I had a friend visiting in Alaska this summer who I asked to pick up some slabs of mastodon ivory. He came back with three tusk sections! if you can find someone to cut it, I'd be more than willing to sell some cheap.

I would also like to recommend David Warther, I have bought from him several times in the past and am very happy with what I have gotten from him.

He sells on ebay quite a bit. You can get deals quite often on ivory from him there.

Thanks - for a variety of reason (int'l shipping), I have to use mammoth rather than elephant. Or walrus would work too.
