I have a question regarding the match strike pulls. I know what they look like however, I am unsure about the usefulness. Are they used as a match strike? Does it work? Or is the more like the nib on a handsaw? It something that is on most saws but no one knows for sure what they were used for.

TX planes just a FYI the match stikes do work but you need to use strike anywhere matches

Ps I have never found a use for a saw nib, but heard all sorts of folklore regarding them

They work OK if the match is white tipped and not too old. And not as good as the emory board strikers on the side of a box.

Good strike-anywhere matches, like the old Ohio Kitchen blue-tips of my youth, could be easily struck on a matchstrike pull. Of course, those matches were good enough that when I was in Scouts we'd see what else we could strike them off of- zippers, the rust on the car fender, that one guy's braces, you name it. Those things were gold. If I knew back then how bad SA matches would get I would have laid in a few thousand for future use- modern ones simply don't work as well.

Edited to add- Joy! Apparently Jarden decided to bring them back, and according to some internet boards they're as good as ever. Now to go buy a box.

Which are not as common as they were back in the day. Some places even banned them in favor of the safety match which you have to strike on the box.

Funny you should say this, I recently ran out of the bulk of my stash and have not been able to find any anywhere have some left but not many, the place I used to purchase is over a hours drive, two states and a toll each way, so not worth the hassle, and those greenlight ones they sell online have terrible reviews.

Brett, thank you. The video was very helpful. I've always liked the look. Now that I realize the match strike pull is so functional....it's now on my wish list. :o

You're welcome good sir. I have always enjoyed the aesthetics on them. Especially, on the bullet and stockman patterns.

Good luck with the hunt.

I've never tried to upload a youtube. Hope this works.

Good video, Brett. If you use the Insert Video option instead of Link it will embed the video in your post.

I've never found the matchstrike pulls to be particularly useful. It works, but it's not nearly as easy as using the box. I think that has more to do with the quality of newer strike anywhere matches, as stated above. They do look good, especially on a long pull.

I've never tried striking a match on a knife pull, but it's a good excuse to show one of my best looking knives! ;)
