Match waterproofing which doesn't work. Well.

Using a lit candle (using the melted wax, paraffin or stearin) to waterproof matches is a common tip.

Before you use it, or rather before you rely on it, test if it really works with your matches.

It's sort of impractical to coat the whole match, as then you don't have much to hold onto when you light it. Most matches I've tested this on are made of a wood which absorbs water through the exposed end, gets all wet on the inside of the coating and sort of dissolves the match head. Of course not if you just drop them into water, but letting them float in water an hour can be enough.

Nowadays I prefer to rely on storm matches which really are waterproof, as the match head itself seems to be impervious to water, at least for the 12-24h I've tested them.
