Matched set of KABAR caping knives

Hi guys,

A fellow member of CanadianGunnutz posted a photo (on that website's knife forum) of a matched set of KABAR caping knives, along with their brown leather dual sheath. One is slightly larger than the other, and they remind me (other than the handle material and the shape of the pommel) of small Buck knives.

I'd never seen anything like that. Could somebody here perhaps provide some background info?

Many thanks!

Post the pics here or post a link to that tread.

I went back the CGN website, and copied the relevant URL/link (I've never mastered the Science/art of posting photographs) ... and was going to do as you asked.

But ... you sound grumpy/impatient/pissed-off ... and I don't wanna subject some stranger to that "unknown" ...

Not very impressed with CGN. Can't read a single thread in any forum without apparently registering as a member. First time I've encountered that in a forum.

It's pretty tough to know exactly what you're asking about if we can't see the knives. I'm curious and I'm certain that your question will be answered here but not without the pics.
Your call.

Good point. I don't know how to post pics, but here's the link.

Zzyzzogeton is saying that you have to be a member in order to see it, but that seems unusual. Please let me know if it works.

Dimensions of the knives are 3 7/8" blade and 7 5/8" OAL for the larger one, 3" blade and 6 3/4" OAL for the short one. The handles are stacked leather, with triple spacers (white/red/white) at both ends. The pommels are nicely sculpted (more "character" than the blander Buck style) and appear to be aluminum. The double case (in brown leather) is tooled in a flowery design.

Hopefully Toooj will tell us what he thinks.

I don't know what they are but I do know that I'd buy them in a heartbeat if I saw them in an antique store.

What protourist said - you are not allowed to even look at anything w/o being registered. That's like buying a pig in a poke.

Hey Protourist,

Thank you very much for the assistance ... as I commented to the guy, he's stumbled onto quite a collectible, I think.

Zzyzzogeton, I wasn't aware of that policy ... I've been a regular member there for years, and it was never mentioned by anybody. I'm wondering what the reason is. I could understand the need for a membership for posting and searching, but for just observing/lurking/learning?

EDIT: I just posted this thread on the GunNutz website

"Hi guys,

Just a quick question ...

I was on Bladeforums.com earlier today ... trying to research a knife that a fellow CGN member had enquired about here on CGN. One of the Bladeforum guys suggested I post a link to the relevant CGN post (and photo), but another fellow promptly grumbled that you have to join CGN to even view the website. Another fellow wanted to help and confirmed that ... yes ... you have to be a member (which he did, immediately, so he could see and share the knife photos in my BF thread).

It's a small and inconsequential "hoop to jump through" ... but I was wondering about the reason for the membership in order to simply view/lurk/learn. I do understand and realize that a proper ID and membership is an obvious necessity for posting and using the site's other features.

I don't have any "issue" with the policy ... just curious to know the rationale behind it."

This might help http://www.kabar.com/content/files/H...fe_Pricing.pdf
If the blade of your knife is marked with a four-digit code, you may be able to find it on the list here. If you can't find a product code, we may be able to help you identify your knife using photos. Please shoot both sides of the blade, note any unique markings, measurements, etc, and send it to info@ka-bar.com. Please allow a couple weeks for a response... sometimes these things are really tough to pinpoint.
Cheers. I think I had the smaller one when I was about 5 as a sheath knife . I have my Dads Vietnam Kbar they are good knives.

Oldmanron I wasnt mad or anything. Sorry if i came across that way.
These are verry interesting never seen anything like it.

Hey Monstrum, no problem ... that was just my typical "Canadianness" bubbling-up ... the painfully-polite stereotype that everybody jokes about ... the one where we typically apologize when someone-else accidentally steps on our foot :)

Anyways ... the original CGN poster contacted KA-BAR (through that earlier link that another fellow had posted/provided) ...

And ... a short while later ... the owner-guy posted this on the related CGN thread ...

"Heard back from Ka-Bar. They said these knives were made sometime in the 30's or 40's. It took quite a few photos before they could nail it down, so I don't think they see many of these."

Thank you to the BF folks here who took an interest.
