Being new to this forum I do not want to be asking stupid questions, so just in case i appologies. I was looking to buy material for a custom knife, I was going to make one. My local metall supplier quoted $200 dollars for a SS enough to make one knife. $200 ? Are they crazy or am I? For that kind of money I can buy any knofe i want, okay maybe not any, but definitely a nice one. What am doing wrong, where should I call to find the right material for the right price.

And welcome to the forums! Read up on it all and you will learn everything there is to know about making and breaking knives:D

Some of the materials that I use are in that price range for enough steel to make a Bowie knife. There are others that are much less expensive.

Many steel suppliers sell the steel in a full bar (often 21 feet long) or if sheared from sheet, a full shear width(often 3-4 feet).Even if you want only 16 inches of it you will pay for the whole thing.I always try to buy a whole bar or cut.You can get a lot of blades from one piece that way.The seller will usually cut it into shorter pieces for free. The knife suppliers already sell it in user size pieces.

Thank you everybody. Back in the old country, where I’m from, I used to make mostly kitchen knives, but never did anything here since I've came here, oh about 16 years ago. But recently I decided to take up on this trade again. I’m yet to learn all the terminology and ins and out of the trade. Back in Soviet Union, I was lucky, the place I used to work for, had heat treating department and blacksmith on staff, so I could have blade forged and heat treated on the spot here I am yet to learn how to do all of this. Thank you again.
