Material for hamon

Looking through a recent post I saw images of a blade being heat treated with some kind of material (looked like modeling clay or putty) applied to create an interesting hamon .

Can anyone tell me what the material is and how to prepare it.

Many thanks

DB - I'm not sure what variety of clay BACustoms( if that was the post you refer to) uses. Many knife makers use a product called Satinite that can be purchased online. Others use anything from standard high-temp furnace cement to secret homemade mixtures.

The clay is only one part of a rather involved process that begins with the choice of steel, and includes hours of tedious hand polishing and careful acid etching. I'm sure if you keep track of BA's thread he will detail those processes in the next few steps.

Good luck.

It is Satinite, go to k&g knifemaking website to order or ellis custom knives

Thanks Bill

I use satanite, make a thin wash to protect the blade from scale then thicker to make the actual (hopefully) hamon in the metal.

Is there any other places to get it? I looked at both of the recommendations above. K&G and Ellis, and didn't find it.

You can use the search function for
