I have about 25 pounds of reel mower bed knives that are worn out from use on sanded golf greens. I tried making a knife from one today, and wondered if anyone has any info on what they are made from. I have 3/16" thick and 1/8" thick blades. I figured 1070 or similar carbon steel, but when trying to soften them with a mapp gas torch, they didnt act like the simple steels I've softened this way before. They are made by Toro, and cost ~$50 bucks new, with minimal machining, just a groove for lapping and chamfered holes for bolting. Seems expensive for 10XX steel, but maybe machining is more than I thought.
