the knife im thinking of making is a simple 5160 combat utility knife, kinda like a thicker, tougher kabar. im not sure what to wrap the handle with, i've heard lots of bad things about using paracord, is there a better material to wrap it with, i read about one guys using kydex to heat form and wrap the handle, but im not sure if customers would like that or not, so i just need some suggestions on what materials to use.

You could use leather, if done right looks really good. What about doing scales like wood, G10 or micarta? You could make them thick and just round them to give that oval/round feeling. You can even file grooves in them if you want more grip or a certain look.

If you saturate it with epoxy it wont matter what you wrap it with except for looks.

West System marine epoxy 105 resin and 207 hardener will turn all kinds of cord into solid, durable, waterproof handles. Kind of pricey to set up with, but works great and will do a looooot of handles.

I'm curious what was said negative about using paracord. I use primarily paracord for modern styling and hemp or cotton for primitive styling. I really want to try some bamboo cord, which Ben Tendick uses quite well.

Paracord and a properly applied soak of good epoxy ( West System or System Three) is a superb rough use handle. Search "paracord Handle".

Check the "miniature gladius " post in the sword section. That's my gladius with a handle of some wire wrapped for good gripping shape , and some surgical tubing and heat shrink tubing . Mecha had the idea and made it work. There are many types of heat shrink perhaps one would be good for a fullsize sword.
