Which of the materials commonly worked by knifemakers are toxic? I know some chromium steels, like stainless, can be a problem, as can be phenolics and belt grinding grits. What other materials may be a problem? What serious or longlasting maladies can arise - silicosis, various heavy metal poisoning, etc?

What are the various protective devices do you use or measures do you take to minimize toxicity, aside from eye protection, respirators or dust collection systems? Do you protect from skin absorbtion?

Any good web sites that describe the potential health risks of these materials or this type of work?

Mike you have to treat every dust and mist as potentially toxic and take precautions. Even the most common materials can be injurious in excess...wheat flour is edible but inhaled in sufficient quantities can cause severe respiratory problems. Ventilate, filter and lastly use personal protective equipment if the first two do not eliminate the hazzard.
