Matriarch clip

Just got the Matriarch and was rather surprsed that the clip is not attached with the usual 3 torx screws, but with a single sort of 4-slot open center screw (I'm sure there a name for that but I'm screw illiterate), which looks like you would use a coin to unscrew.
Is this just particular to the Matriarch or is it a new trend?

Not necessarily a bad thing, since my fat fingers always have trouble with tiny torx screws.
However, it is somewhat hard to unscrew without maring which apparently the assembler discovered since there a few minor mars on it already.

i believe the barrel screw is standard on a lot of spydercos. The salt series for sure.

It is an 13+ year old design that dates back to at least the Endura3 handle, which is very similar if not identical to the handle of the original (AND current sprint run) Matriarch (well, actually vice versa: the Matriarch inherited its handle from the E3). That's why the salt series have them, too: they use the unlinered old Delica/Endura 3 handles (in their case because of the lacking liners -> they can't rust).

The clip design is called "barrel bolt clip". The 3 torx screws (hourglass) clip on most of the new models needs metal liners, which the SALTs and the Matriarch don't have.

Edit: Murdoc beat me to it, good explanation----Common to the older Endure 3 handle that the Matriarch uses, two nickles work grea.t for unscrewing the bolt

I don't have a Salt or Delica/Endura, so had not encountered it before on a Spyderco.

Thanks much for the explanation and the name...I knew it had to have one!

There are no liners in the knife for the 3 torx screws to be secured to. You are correct about using the coin on the barrel bolt. You need to pennies otherwise you might spin forever. The handles for the Matriarch are based off the Endura 3 handles. Basically the same as the Pacific Salt currently in production. Not new, rather older style, but they are light and strong.
Use blue masking tape on 2 pennies, insert the ends with tape into the area of the barrel where it will catch, turn gently using one hand as an anchor and the other to turn. You will not mar the edges and it will be good as new. ;)

Yep, Spyderco has gotten good use out of that handle. :) - Endura 3, original Matriarch, Spyderhawk, Pacific Salt, H-1 Spyderhawk, Sprint Run Matriarch.

Gotcha. Thanks. I'm sure it would have eventually dawned on me that I had to hold both ends, but I now I don't have to figure it out. :D
I wish the original assembler had used some masking tape.

I do not have mine yet, but I've heard that many of them look a little rough. I'll just have to wait and see.

I will echo what others said.

Also, if you do not want to mare the screw head you could put some tape on the "sides" of the coin and proceed to take the clip out.

After a couple of inspections the rest of the knife looks just fine. Just a few very small spots on the clip screw. Lil black marker and it would be of no notice. Plus if it really bothers me, I would guess Spyderco would send a replacement screw.

I am hoping to have mine tomorrow. I ordered 1 of each for posterity. ;)
