Self-defense in the gravest extreme is a good and life-sustaining purpose. South Africa and Israel seem to be places where society and the legal system understand this. I wouldn't want to have experienced first hand the history that has reinforced this understanding.
There are, however, many people out there who will tell you they would actually prefer to die the death of an innocent victim than to slice and dice an aggressor's body parts with blood all over the place. In many places, such as the UK, that attitude, which some of us find incomprehensable, is the majority view and the law of the land.
The USA is in the middle of a hot debate on that issue, mostly about guns, with knives as a side issue. Note, however that many people consider knives, when used as weapons, more disreputable than guns. Too close! YUCK!
Unlike some other companies (i.e. Cold Steel), Spyderco has chosen not to shout about their products' capabilities as defensive weapons. There is, of course, no need to shout, since people on both sides of the divide will see a knife's capacity for doing damage without being told.
I think I understand why Spyderco would not want to make the mainstream network news for selling the "Black Talon" of pocket knives.
