I've spoken to the local distributor for Spyderco in South Africa this morning (RAMROD MFG). The newest info on Matriarchs is that a batch of 100 Matriarchs is expected by the end of August... More than that they can't tell me...

No word yet on selling price.

What I did not know, is that ONLY 100 Matriarchs will be in the first shipment. I've already reserved 4. If I need to reserve more, I will need to know about it ASAP, so please let me know if there is any more interest from you fellow knifenuts!

Did you send the mail to "dpg@prieska.co.za" as well? Also send to "heynsv@liw.denel.co.za", which I will get next week when I'm back in office...
 
Heyns, I sent to both addresses. I have some bugs that are still being worked out with my service. In case you don't get any of the mail, put me down for a Matriach. This will make a great birthday present for me. Now, if I can figure out how to get my girlfriend to pay for it.

Heyns - Just received the first "production sample last Friday (gray handle, black clip). Looks very nice. Won't be long now.

Hi Sal,
thanks for the update!

This "first production sample" in gray, will it be the same as the ACTUAL production run?

Or will there be BLACK-handled Matriarchs available as well? When, if not in the first batch? I really think that there is a need for the BLACK version as well (if not more so than for the gray version!!)

I guess Sal is refering to the BF exclusive Gray Matriarch. SA & Israeli "Queen Choppers" will be black like the one you saw.

I know Pelle is probably right. Please confirm this!

Why, I think that I'll go pay a visit to Ramtod TODAY, just to make sure that they reserve some space for the batch that's about to come in! And to make sure that they keep my ordered amount aside!!!

Sal, another question on the Matriarch, if you don't mind. I know there was discussion a little while back about the type of edge. I am sure an answer was given, but I can't find it. Will the edge be plain or serrated? I remember the picture of the prototype is plain.

The PROTOTYPE was plain-edged, but the PRODUCTION will be fully serrated.

BTW, I spoke to the guys at Ramrod today. They say that they've ORDERED the BLACK Matriarchs... I guess the gray ones might be for BF? (here we start speculating again!!! Time for Sal to take over now and give the REAL answers...)

WOW! A Bladeforums Matriarch! I cant wait! I was afraid I wouldnt be able to get one. Does anyone know about how much they will be? Can we order one (or two) now?

O.K. I just got a reply from Spark in the BF store forum. Evidently we will not be getting a BF Matriarch. I guess I wont be able to get a Matriarch afterall.

Here is the response:
"Not until all of the Natives are sold.

We made a knife that you, the BladeForums.com Members, requested. Then, when it came time to actually buy the knife, many of the preorders backed out.

So, please be patient with our reluctance to get more knives until the current ones have finished selling."

I for one would be willing to pay for one now and wait for it to come in. Otherwise I have to find one from South Africa and have it shipped in.

I guess it's pretty easy to understand Spark's postition. The BF Native was created to help offset the cost of the site. Instead, it turned out to be a cash burden.

I wouldn't want to create any more inconvenience for Mike & Spark than has already been caused.

At this time, we don't know why sales were not as planned. If it was the price of the knife, then we probably would have been better off making a FRN model of a different color. If it was the choice of model, then we were inaccurate in our original assesment. My apologies.

Actually, Spyderco will have to sell the 200 pcs not taken to break even on the project.

OK, fellow forumites, here's the NEWEST from Ramrod:
- the Matriarchs are expected at the END of September (I guess they're playing it safe!!)
- the price MIGHT be around $75, but nothing firm at this stage...

Not as if we didn't all know about this, but I thought I'd do an OFFICIAL update here!

I think that the BF Native's eventual selling price was the problem. You know, the one price given earlier, and another (quite a bit higher) price given at selling time! I think it went just a TAD high for most budgets, with so many other EXTERMELY nice MUST-HAVE Spydies out there!
