matriarch

The Matriarch is primarily a defensive or rescue folder. It's basicly a shortened Civilian blade on an Endura handle. This makes it lighter and less expensive than the Civilian, but still able to perform like one. Excellent at cutting seat belts, rope, webbing, clothes, etc. in a rescue situation. Primarily a slasher in a defensive mode. Well made and available to forumites from Spyderco Factory Outlet.

I'm curious (and I'm not completely awake yet -- before 8pdt on a Sunday, but getting ready to drive up to Blade Show West)...

I ordered a Matriarch a while back, and it's quite nice (it's convincing me I ought to own an Endura98); when I called to order it, I think they asked for my "username" (I'm a little unclear on this because the phone connection was bad, and my username is my full name, which they'd need anyway). Are they actually looking Forum members up on a listing (or online) to enforce the "only to BF members" rule?

I'm certainly not looking for a way around the restriction, I'm just curious if it's actually being checked, or if they're relying on "security through obscurity".

Anyways, like I said, it's quite nice, it's scary sharp, and it's just plain scary; this is one I won't be carrying on a daily basis (maybe just on an occasional nighttime walk) because it's much more likely to worry anyone who sees it. It's the only one of my recent knife purchases that has caused my girlfriend to do a double-take and express concern.

And Mr. Sastre is much too modest to mention that the BF store has a supply of his very own concealex neck sheaths for the Matriarch; still waiting for mine, but if it's anything like his BF Native sheath...

Well, off to the show now,
-- Carl

The Matriarch has become my primary carry knife (along with a SAK). I use the Tinker to open boxes and such, and keep the Matriarch in reserve for rescue tasks.

I also wear a G-10 Harpy at work in a Sastre neck sheath, but that's a separate thread entirely.

The Matriarch is a great tool. I find it's size and handle-combination to be perfect for everyday carry.

The only problem I'm having with the Matriarch is that the Zytel isn't strong enough to hold the clip in place. As you know, the clip is the new-style ambidextrous clip that can be removed with a coin. Whenever I brush up against something, the clip rotates out of its square (and gouges the Zytel). This doesn't happen with the G10 BF Native, for instance.

I've been carrying mine every day since I got it. I carry it on my left (support) side, and rotate the ones on my right side.

Jackstraw,
I suggest that you use the search feature and look for "matriarch". The topic has been thoroughly discussed in the past...

In case you are interested, I just got my Matriarch today. It is a neat knife. It is much lighter than the Civilian and shorter also. Although the basic style of the blade would make less than ideal for use where it could be observed by alot of people who are knife phobic, I can imagine that it would be usefulin a number of utility purposes. Although it was designed for self defense, I would recommend it only for self defense use on one's property or place of business unless one lives in a state where the knife could be licensed or one is an LEO. Otherwise, the agressive design might be used by the perpetrator's lawyer or the prosecutor to suggest that one was looking for trouble. Obviously, if aperson found his or herself in situation where violent self defense was necessary, one would act first and worry about consequences later, but it is a fact that if at all possible, a knife carrier should avoid appearing to be a trouble maker. i know I'm way off the subject, I just want to say that the Matriarch is a great knife and a heck of a good deal. If you want one get one before they are gone.

The Matriarch is very nice, very affordable and very Civilian like in appearance and use.

If you get a Matriarch, be sure to get one of Mike Sastre's sheaths - it's a nice way to carry it.

BladeForumites,

Spyderco is giving us a terrific discount on the Matriarch. Also, purchasing one of Mike's sheaths will benefit BladeForums.

That's my plug for the day!
