I was just curious as to what all of you Spyderco fanatics out there use, or plan to use your Matriarchs for. I know originally ( from what I hear ) it was kinda intended as a more SD oriented knife being a hair bit more utilitarian than the old Civilian. With that being said what use if any does yours see. All in all I'm glad to see Spyderco resurrect some of there older more obscure models but the Matriarch strikes me as a collectable of a sort aside from a limited use EDC knife and of course a SD knife ( whole other can of worms ) and that's fine by me. I sill want one for the sake of ownership, but that's about the only justification I can conjure up for owning one.

It's a self defense knife, one of the absolute best ones I can think of. Hardly any utilitarian purpose other than saving your life.

They are pretty good for light gardening work (wife used mine to prune roses...) No damage to the knife :D

Mine is a brown PE

I'm pretty lucky I guess because I got one of the first run VG-10 models. I've carried for SD but I'm confident that you could use the Matriarch for other purposes. I also have one of the Sprint Run brown handled PE versions and it is a safe queen thus far. When it comes to any type of Hawkbill I find that a serrated Hawkbill is far more useful for me for many types of cutting chores.

I have several Spyderco PE Hawkbills and once in a while I'll pull out my Blue VG-10 original, PE Spyderhawk for certain cutting chores. I mainly use it for outdoor stuff like harvesting persimmons when they are ripe in the autumn. I also use it to harvest other wild edibles. I'm sure you could use any of the Matriarch models to do the same if you are careful with it.

I have the original ATS55 version. It's a self-defense knife. I carry it regularly, so much that the black paint is worn off the clip, but I have never used it. I keep the edge pristine for leather, cloth and skin. When I first got it, I tried it out on some materials...it works.

I've done a bit more research on the Matriarchs and Civilian and am impressed with the intended usage of the knives and their odd looking reversed S shaped blade profile. While I'm not a huge proponent of using a knife for self defense I think You'd be hard pressed to find a better knife than the Civilian or Matriarch. They are purely a SD knife and by no means a killing knife and seem to be a very effective tool regardless. I might have to add one to my Spyderco collection for the aesthetics alone. Heck I might even carry it on occasion and maybe if I'm real careful even preform some simple mundane tasks with it.

I was carrying mine 4 to 6 days a week as a last-ditch defense option against dogs when riding my bike. It started to get some surface rust (from my corrosive sweat) on it and I am selling it to a friend. Tried cleaning it, lubing it and Tuf-Glide, but I don't want the regular hassle of this, so I got a Spyderhawk in H-1 which will hopefully serve the same purpose without having to keep up with rust.
