Awhile back, Matthew Gregory posted up a large fighter he had made from CruforgeV and bocote. He took some flack for his handle treatment, and I was one of the flack throwers, although I didn't realize at the time that his choice for a simple handle was supported by sound logic, (no pun intended:)). In fact, his handle evoked 'broom handle' for some, (hence the title for the post).

I'm happy to report, that this knife has a very carefully designed handle which looks simple, but provides what is required for a knife that is concealable, but more importantly it provides for instantaneous and intuitive motion. The flatness of the sides gives a ton of leverage and control, and although I'm used to highly sculpted handles, this one has really opened my eyes to a different approach in creating an efficient knife. Transitioning the knife side to side, cutting out or in, or in a back cut, the handle combined with the overall low weight makes for a very nice handling knife indeed.

This knife weighs only 390 grams, or .85 of a pound. The blade measures 11 3/8", and is just shy of 1/4" thick.

As is customary for me, here are some shots of Matt's attention to detail when it comes to the packaging of his knives. A good packaging job means a lot to me, as it shows a level of care which follows the knife to its end destination;

And, a quick 'performance test';

All I have with me today is my crappy camera, but you can see that Matthew's fitment is pretty good.

I'll get some more upclose pics posted tomorrow.

I am very pleased with this knife, and because of that, and my fondness for Matt in general, I have zero hesitation in recommending him to anyone looking to buy a high performance custom knife. This knife was very reasonably priced as well, and value is something that means a lot to me too. This knife is really all that, and a bag of chips.

Thanks Matt, I love this knife!:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I remember that knife, I liked the handle shape. To me it is no different than that of a stag or ivory handle which both perform well in modern bowie fighting techniques. I may steal that design (with credit given, of course) for a similar project I have going.

Congrats on a very nice knife!

Glad to see that one went to a very good home. I'm pleased to have one of Matt's blades in my collection and feel sure you will enjoy yours. He puts a lot of thought and care into his work. Just don't tell him I said that.

oops, blade is Cruforge V, not CPM 3V:o

Great grab for a great guy

Matt uncool I want a knife

I enjoy Matt and his knives very much :)

thank you Joe! Maybe I'll send it your way for a visit one day:)
not right away, though;):D

and thank you too Roger, I will try and make my home as comfortable and fun as possible for this wycked wytch. Will journey into the jungle for some foliage disembowelment and decapitation this weekend...

and thanks for the 'grats y'all I appreciate it. Matt deserves some praise, this is a very FINE knife! I like it more and more...

Nice work. I know that blade was probably a PITA to sand. That Cru Forge is great, but it scoffs at mortal abrasives.

Nice blade score Lorien, congrats. That should treat you right in the brush!

Best,
Eric

Cool! Can't wait to see the Broomstick Bowie put through it's paces. She's so light and fast, my guess is she'll make quick work of brush and light limbing.

You're right, Joe (Mandt) - the stuff is brutal to hand sand. This was brought to 600, but I'll be damned if CruForgeV ever manages to look like it. No matter what I do, there always appears to be a line-y-ness to the finish. I've taken it to 1200 grit in the past, and it just doesn't look right. Buffing at 600 is nice, but looks strange on hidden tang blades.

Joey P, we've talked. I know you had different expectations from my latest piece, and I admit it - I got distracted by hamon. Never should have used 1095. ; ) I promise, when I get my butt in gear I'll make it!

Rog, love ya, Pal!

That is quite impressive.

Nice score, congratulations.

Kind regards,

Jos

just wait til you see the little video I made this morning. I'll be posting a link to it within the hour.

ps. Matt KNOWS sharp!

Thanks Roger, I was a little bleery eyed it was around 7am and a little low on caffeine.

Matt sent me this knife on spec, which was super cool of him, but the reciprocity has occurred and hopefully he will be pleased with his payment.

ps. Roger- congratulations on 10K dude!

So Cool. I sure love that knife.

I remember the "broom handle" discussing. I sure liked the look of the handle!
