hey everybody....does anybody have any firsthand experience with lamey's knives....i am looking for info in terms of sharpness, edge retention, chopping ability....i am thinking of getting a knife from him and haven't found out that much yet....any info would be a great help....thanks so much.....ryan

Matt spends almost as much time cutting stuff as making knives. I spent a couple hours at Matt's the other day, his new shop is Jimmy Fike's old shop. I think some of the Fike's sharpness has rubbed of on Matt  :D

You will not be disapointed with a Lamey knife.

Take a look at the "Customs for sale" area.

and there's a beautiful one for sale at a good price in the FS forums

i got plenty of Matt's knives...and i can't get enough of of them. can't destroy any of them cutting stuff either. his new style is extremely well made and functional and AFFORDABLE!

get yourself one...and happy cutting.

I had a kitchen knife made by him, and it performed like a champ as far as sharpness and edge retention went. I would definitely recommend his work to you.

Mine came really, really sharp. I'm hoping to put it through some fun chopping this weekend if my friend with the backyard is still going to let me come over.

thanks for all the infoguys......did matt lamey train under jimmy fikes.....i was trying to find out but my search didn't turn up much....i found out fikes doesn't make knives anymore but that was about it...does anybody know the story......thanks ryan

Ryan, feel free to email or call, I must admit though sometimes It takes me a while to answer emails.

I Wouldnt say I "trained" under Jimmy, but I was fortunate enough to gain Jimmy as a friend. I spent time with him in the shop over the past year or so, and just sitting there watching learned as much or more than I had in the previos 5 years or so. Eventually I wound up buying Jimmys house, shop etc. We are still in close contact to the day.

Im fortunate enough to have somewhat of a "Fikes" museum in the shop. Jimmy has done more amazing stuff that folks have never seen than probably anyone out there.

He may not be making any future knives for various reasons, but my fingers are crossed I can get him out here to finish up some blades.

Ive been making knives on/off for about 10 years, and everything has just now began coming together in a way that allows me to make full time, make styles that I enjoy and my customers seem to like as well. Feel free to call,

Matt

i got my second lamey knife, a spear point fighter, about a week ago. as usual, i can't wait to do some cutting, and as i have a week off and the weather is fine...

matt's knives come with a rather toothy, but very sharp edge that cuts hair, newspaper, and rolled kleenex easily. that's sharp enough, even for me :)

mission completed. i whacked 2/3 of the pile with matt's fighter, the rest with tai goo's bush bastid, kevin cashen's fighter, and burt foster's camp knife.
