Hello everyone,
I wanted to post a good word about the work of Matt Lamey. I own a lot of very good quality knives, production and custom, small and large but I have to say that Matt's work continues to impress me more and more.
I just wanted to share my impressions of a particular knife of his that I have, a chopper made of W2 that you can see in the pictures below.
What the pictures do not capture is a giant pile of chopped up wood, some 5-7" thick. Was enough to keep a big fire going for over 8 hours straight. I did all of that in under one hour with the chopper in the pictures. The craziest thing is that unlike many other big blades I've used, some of rather high pedigree -- big names -- this one actually slices into the wood instead of crushing it, even after a good while.
I don't know what's so particularly special about this one -- the geometry, the grind, the steel, and/or the heat treat -- but it just cuts and bites into material like no other blade I have of similar size. And keeps the edge VERY well. I've chopped with it for an hour to two non-stop multiple times, and it still sliced paper afterwards. Maybe was not shaving sharp, but very sharp still, and with no dents, bends, or chips. Quite striking performance.
Thanks Matt for the awesome knives; they are a true pleasure to use -- and addictive
I'd also like to mention that Charlie Edmondson, who, as I understand, learned a thing or two from Matt, also is putting out some fantastic work. I only got acquainted with it recently but the two blades from him that I own are extremely rugged, and of stellar quality. And talk about value!
The usual disclaimer: I am not affiliated with either Matt or Charlie in any way other than being a VERY happy customer and user of their knives.
