as you know, buying a mattress (king size in my case) is a major expenditure, right up there with frig's, stove's, etc. Easily crowding a $1,000. Additionally, and here's the crux of my problem, with all the tech advances it's hard to chose. Memory foam? Great, but I've read it's too hot. The mattress's with the adjustable air? I have my doubts it would last long. So I thought I'd ask for the advice of the community members. Has anyone bought a mattress lately? What did you buy, and how do you like it?

A co-worker of mine swears by his waterbed. IIRC he paid about 1200€ for it, but its a double size, so not much more than buying two matresses and cheaper in the long run, because you don't have to buy a new one every couple of years. Of course the heating costs a bit, but he says his back has gotten much better since he bought it (he has had multiple disc prolapses in the past). Just don't wear any knives to bed :D

I really like the Tempurpedic mattresses, but they are pricey. On the other hand, I spend about 1/3 of my life on the them.

I have slept on temperpedic for about 12 years. They can sleep hoter. If you don't have air conditioning.

It has been that long since I shopped for one. It was a great bed, but is getting a bit soft now. It helped my back, though.

We've slept on a Tempurpedic for a couple of years now. There's nothing like it for certain back problems. Pricey but worth every penny to me, given the long-term pain issues I had been dealing with.

It does sleep a bit warmer, but I'm in bed with my wife and three 70 lb. dogs anyway, so what's another couple of degrees? Newer models than ours have seen some improvements in construction or materials that are supposed to cool them down a bit.

I've never had a problem with spring mattresses. None of the foam mattresses I have tried did much for me.

The best mattress I've ever had was a Simmons Beautyrest. It is an amazingly comfortable bed that is firm yet soft. You won't wake up sweating at night either. It's pretty much good to go. I bought one about 15 years ago it was around $900 for a queen size, got another one 5 years ago, same size was around $1000.

Thanks, Mates, great info and much appreciated. I have to say I'm shocked at the prices some folks paid. $3-4K? Wow! I'm fairly familiar with the memory foam versions, but I do need to do some research on latex mattresses. Anyone have any experience with them? At this point, I have no idea what I'm going to get.

I bought the sleep number 3-4 years ago, don't remember. I have a king also and at the cost of a standard mattress,~900-1500 and up IMO it is well worth the price. I got the basic sleep number with upgrade to the control that shows you the number for around 2400 delivered with set-up and hauling away the old one. Best purchase I have ever made and my back thanks me for it everyday.

Best of luck with your decision.

+1

I have a newer one.. maybe a year old. It is the best bed, super pricey. Mine has a massage and reclines head and feet.. I literally fall asleep in 30 seconds and sleep deeper than ever. If I was a night time burglar, I would first steal the customer list of tempurpedic buyers. No way those people are waking up :)

The salesman showed us a king size mattress with recliner and massager, but by the time we added in the stuff we needed to make the regular king size work, the added $ for the massager and recliner would have had to come from a second mortgage. They were sweet when we tried one, just couldn't find the extra shekels for it.

My wife and I were trying to figure out how old our current mattress is; as near as we can tell, we've had it for 19 years. Guess we got our money's worth out of this one, huh? I'm still doing on-line research, but expect to buy a new mattress by Memorial day when they go on sale. Leaning toward the Simmons beauty rest . Interestingly enough, I found both Sam's club and Costco sell name brand mattresses.

The main thing to watch out for is getting a mattress that's too soft. The soft mattress feels nice when you try it for a minute in the store, but if you sleep on it all night your back will hurt all day.

Recently bought a gel memory foam Serta that doesn't seem to run warm at all( and that was a major concern of mine also). I have a bad back and some arthritis issues that were making sleep difficult on our 7 year old, 17 inch thick, pillow top Springair, I'm sleeping much better now. It seems hard as a rock when I first lay down but it does away with the pressure points.

I must have got a last years close out on this because I paid $598 shipped for the standard king and now it's $1450.

i thought I'd update this thread to let you guys know how I'm progressing. I went to a brick and mortar store and spend an hour or two just laying on different beds, while chatting with the very eager salesman. I decided the bed I liked the best was a Simmons Beautyrest World Class luxury plush pillowtop. It has 800 coil springs with gel and memory foam pillowtop. A nice bed. It went for $2500 or so. When I got home I went to the Simmons factory site, and they recommended an on-line dealer. I ended up ordering amuch more expensive Simmons Beautyrest at $3500, but the final on-line price was only $1600. No sales tax, no delivery charge. Two to three week delivery. I don't yet have the bed, of course, and I've never bought such an expensive item online. So we shall see. If it turns out as promised, and I get exactly what I bought, it's a super deal. If not, well, I'll fight that one if and when it happens.

First bed my wife and I had together was a Simmons Beautyrest queen. That bed went everywhere with us for nearly 20 years before we replaced it. I remember it fondly.
