Hey again, quick question guys, a few years ago I purchased a Maxam Hunting knife, the one with the red and black handle, if you know which one I am talking about, if not I will get a pic. I bought it for cheap, but now that I am comming into more experince with knves and different makes, better steels etc... Just wanted to know where you guys think this knife stands, good, Bad, decent? (Update) heres a pic, the only difference with mine is that it doesnt have Maxam that large on the blade, it is written near where the blade meets the hand guard.

I have the same knife, and it doesnt come close to my Gerber LMF II or my Spyderco folders with VG-10 steel. The maxam came super sharp out of the box. Used it once for slicing some brisket and it became dull quickly. I just put it up in a shelf, and if I need a knife to use with the possibility of losing or breaking this will be the one. I paid around 14 dollars for this knife and I got what I paid for.

I don't see any pictures. Is it this one? Maxam knives are generally not received very well on the forums.

Thats is the one. Thats a shame, they come sharp out of the box, and they have an awesome look, but I guess not bad for the money?

I had an El Cheapo Japanese made knife when I was growing up, similar to your Maxam. My old Japanese knife actually held up pretty well, but I wouldn't buy another. (I do remember that it dulled really quickly.) It was stolen with all my other knives about 10-12 years ago.

Ironically, my father in law has the same knife I had, and after looking at his, I realized that for the time, mine was fairly well made for a utilitarian knife.

If that Maxam did what you asked of it, then I think it was the right knife for the time. I'd retire it now, though.

Now you need a Busse. Your world will be in harmony then. ;)

thx - cpr
