anyone know anything abou Maxam knives?? I'm not looking for bee-all end all of knives but something folding that will prove useful on a daily basis. They have a lifetime warranty...... if that matters at all......lol

Hello,

MAXAAM. Cheap, 440 steel (holds a good edge), but in my honest opinion, not particularly well made. To buy one, as a user you would have to rely on would be a mistake. There are some GOOD knives out there, for not a lot more, especially close outs, and discontinued models.

If you value your life cheaply, buy a cheap knife!!

Regards,

Doug

Incidentally, the reason they offer a lifetime warranty is probably because they are so cheap to make and sell, they probably imagine (quite rightly), that few will bother to return them, and even if they do, to replace it, would still make their total outlay, less than the profit on the sale.

My 2 cents worth!

Cool, That's what I figgured. The "hunting knife" was made of 420J2 (which doesn't mean a damn thing to me!!!) and the lockbacks were not listed what they were made of. There was 6 knives on ebay for $25 US. 1 hunting, and various lockback and tanto blades. Glad I passed it up. Thanks for the replies guys.

Other than that, are there any inexpensive (not cheap) knives you'd reccomend. I'd like an all purpose folding knive. It doesn't have to cut 10 inch thick rope or go through car doors, but have a reliable lock and hold a blade long enough to skin a deer....

Thanks in advance

Pat

Do you want a fixed blade or folder, if you want a good cheap fixed blade you can get a Mora from http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html it will do anything you need and more if your looking for a folder go to www.eknifeworks.com and look around i'm sure they will have something thats in your price range just stay away from united cutlery knives. Oh and I know how maxam gives you a lifetime warrenty, on the side of the box it says "send this knife to _______ with 5.00 for return postage" well the knife you buy from your dealer only cost about 2-3bux from the wholesaler so no telling how much they get them for so with your 5bux they are just saleing you a new knife.

Pat,

IMHO, you will not find better "inexpensive" knives than the Victorinox Swiss Army knives.

If you want a good solid single blade folder with a strong lock, go to Wal-Mart and get a Kershaw Vapor or Vapor II(larger version). $20 and $25 respectively. If you ask me, this is a bargain on a very nice little knife.

don't forget CRKT as inexpensive quality knifes. have bunch of them.. only one had a problem.. blade play, send for waranty.. got new one :)
nice company :) nice knifes for a buck

one more thing. now you can get CRKT zycel MIRAGE with 3" and 4" blade
plain, 50/50 or seratated blade for about 20$ shipped. U can't go wrong with this knife (if you can stand spear blade profile)

Thanks, You've all been very helpful. I'd rather not order over net so for now, I think I'll check WalMart for those Kershaws. Not sure if they carry them in Canadian WalMarts though. I remember seeing Buck, Schrade Old Timers, and a couple of really crappy ones that even I wouldn't even consider.

Once again, Thanks alot!!

Pat

For a fixed utility blade- you'll not find anything any better than the Mora at anywhere near 4x the price. The guy @ Ragweed Forge is a pleasure to deal with.
