Hi all,
I know some of you guys have these packs but how did you come to terms with what works best for you? I am looking for a day pack with side pockets for water bottles (not bladders) and large enough to carry a change of clothes, snacks for the kids, and psk/fsk.
I have been eye balling the Pygmy Falcon but am not sure if it is big enough or if it fits well for me.
Is there anywhere that sells these packs in a store so you can touch, feel try on etc?
Also, Pygmy vs some of the larger versions. Please include pics of what you load.
Thanks in advance.

I have the Max Malaga and a Falcon 2 pak. The Malaga is a single sling pak, and works ok for day use. I have found that I would rather have both shoulder straps, so I don't use the Malaga as much as I used to. It is desert tan. If you would like to try it out I'll send it to you.

The Falcon 2 is much bigger, but would work for day use in a hiking/site seeing type way. You can add attachments (water bottle holders) but, I think it would be overkill for say a daily use haversack. You've seen mine in some of my posts. Go to Maxpedition.com for the Malaga and Pygmy Falcon pictures and specs.

I would suggest the Pygmy Falcon above all listed here. One day I'll break down and get one too.

I would recommend the Pygmy Falcon II as the best pack Maxpedition makes for your intended use. I have one I use for hunting and also for EDC and it works great.

I have the verisa jumbo pack. I use it for everyday carry. They make one that is bigger that might do for your needs. I like carry it on my side.

I have the Maxpedition PFII and the Malaga. If you are talking about a change of clothes that amounts to a rolled up t-shirt, a pair of Cabela's hiking shorts or BDU shorts and an extra pair of socks, some snacks, FAK and SKIT...then yeah, either one will work well. You start talking about pants and other stuff? You better roll tight and pack with great compression, you begin to run out of room quickly. I have all sorts of Maxpedition and Tactical Tailor Pouches to customize the PFII or Malaga, whichever I decide to use on any given occasion, etc. Most of the survival-related stuff, monocular, GPS, compass, strobe and related stuff goes in the exterior, add-on pouches.

Here are your AL dealers. I'd call them before visiting, cause most dealers carry a limited stock and rely on "drop ship" sales.

Here is a pic I found of the Malaga along with my sons Fatboy and couple of the Falcon 2. Sorry about the quality on the malaga pic. I had to crop and enlarge to get it. Press "Control" and the "+" key to enlarge your screen for a better view.

Juniorspark is 105 pounds without the pack :D So you can see the size without the water bottles attached. That's an old whiskey still out near the goldmine in Paulding Forest.

johnspark, Is this your Falcon 2? http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=653991 It doesnt look all that big.

Norcal, thanks for the pics. What load out do you carry in there? How much room to spare? When I go deer hunting, I like to carry rain pants/poncho, a heavier coat for colder weather, ammo, food, water, psk/fsk.

Yep that's my son's pack. It'll hold a good bit of stuff. He is not carrying that much in his, so it is somewhat compressed in this picture.

I just got a falcon 2 as a gift. I dont have any experience with it yet, though I really dont find it that big, especially as it sinches down to nothing when no in use. it comes bladder capable although if you wanted to add a couple water bottle holders it wouldnt be a big deal. And for longer day trips it'll hold a decent amount of gear especially having the capabilities to strap all manner of things on to it. thats the one I'd get.

I think I'd need to go with the Condor2. I Really like the PF2 but I'm 6'5" with a shoulder to shoulder width of 21" so I think it would be too small.

Miasma- I never heard of that pack but after viewing it online it seems very robust. At $249, it's probably not what I would be willing to pay for a day pack.

Here's my Malaga rig from a while back. It's a little different now, but you get the idea.

For clothes I typically use my Falcon II, but for an ultralight change of clothes then the Malaga would be great. Gearslingers aren't for everybody, but if you don't carry TOO much (you have to do some serious playing with the straps in order to get it comfortable for extended wearing when overloaded) and like having access to your bag without needing to remove it, as well as a ton of modular possibility, then I'd recommend it. It's my EDC and day-hiking bag. Anything more and I'll switch to the Falcon II. :)
