Maxpedition backpacks to fit a 17" laptop?

School's about to start up again, and I find my Incase sling pack a little lacking in the load-carrying capacity.

Specifically, the books, notebooks, and 17" 5.6 lb laptop I occasionally lug around on top of it. Not to mention, the single strap just doesn't distribute the weight as well as I'd like!

I'm trying to find a Maxpedition or similar heavy-duty bag that will carry all that stuff, and preferrably one with a seperate laptop compartment so I don't have to put it in a seperate bag inside my bag.

Any suggestions?

I have a Kodiak Gearslinger. It carried both my work laptop and my netbook.

check out the outdoor products powerpack backpack bag; specifically designed for carrying a laptop and books and etc. i use one for business travel and it's the best i have every used to carry and travel with a laptop.

i'm a hardcore maxped guy (monsoon/malaga/jumbo fat/proteus/devildog/and more); their bigger backpacks of course will carry a laptop, but they have nothing specifically designed for the purpose...

I EDC a Maxpedition Condor II to work every day. Also use it for day hikes. Although my first impression was that it would be smaller than what I was looking for, I can't believe how much stuff I can get in there. It would be an awesome book bag, IMO.

But as pilote said, there is no separate compartment for laptop if that is important to you.

Actually the Maxpedition Kodiak has a specific spot for carrying a laptop. I have even taken a fall off my motorcycle and rolled a few times with it on and the laptop was fine.

I second the Kodiak.
After looking at the line, it is your best bet with a laptop of that size.
maxpedition.com has some great pics and a usage video of it if you want to check it out.

i stand corrected...the Kodiak has a slot for a laptop...however...

i looked at the kodiak at the store...i don't believe the laptop slot can fit a 17" laptop; they are wide and pretty heavy...significantly heavier then the 15" screens models...

the slot is not well padded...surrounded by books and other solid matter, IF the kodiak can fit a 17"er, take a dive with that bemoth in the bag and you might have a different story to tell...

of a lesser issue to consider is 1-strap gearslinger style vs. 2-strap backpack carry...1-strap style is not comfortable with a very heavy load...multiple books and a 17"er is a very heavy load...

check it out...it is a viable maxped option...but given my experience with this issue, i strongly suggest pursuing a bag/backpack SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED to hold and give max protection and convenience for a laptop (especially a larger 17"er).

Have you considered a case designed to carry a laptop? I like my Maxpedition gear, but for laptop transport I use Targus.

TXL617 Targus 17” XL Laptop Backpack:

Ahh, too bad they don't make one with a sleeve. I have a Case Logic that's similar to the above Targus, but have really been looking for something a little more multi-purpose.

I may end up just getting something with multiple compartments and putting the laptop in it's own sleeve.

Maxpedition condor II + 17 inch

...it fits, but there is the BIG issue of shock protection; it may not be a big issue to you, but for many like me who move fast and hard in the course of our workday toting a laptop, damage from shock has catastrophic consequences...i need that risk to be zero as my job depends on it.

no way would i transport my laptop in that condor without at least a good neoprene slipcover; i'd also have a piece of foam in the bottom to cushion shock from drops (have done this)...the best bags have a padded, "floating pocket" for the laptop...

so yes, a 17"er fits in a condor...and if just getting it in there is all you're concerned with, well then problem solved.

After whacking my laptop on the car door, I opted for a Tom Binh Vertical Brain Cell which is carried in a regular backpack - Osprey Kestrel 32 -- with room to spare. The laptop w/brain cell rides in the main compartment.

The pack is excellent for hikes too.

Maxpedition does make a bag specifficly for a laptop, the operator tactical attache case.
