What was I thinking that could purchase this knife instead of a Chris Reeve small sebenza! I bought a 25 Sebenza a couple of weeks ago and felt that it was a little too big for my taste. During that time of adjustment to the 25's size, I ordered a small size Excelsa. I viewed a number of YouTube video reviews on the knife before pulling the trigger. I didn't really see any negative reviews so I ordered one. Came quickly and packaged really well. Just like the videos said it would. Well that is about all that was positive about this knife. Too bad the box can't do what I expect a good knife to do. Out of the box you can't even cut a piece of paper. Came overly oiled as well. Had to wipe some off. The size is what I expected it. I wanted a small edc and this size fit the bill. The feel of the knife when I first took it out of the package felt very cheap. Felt like I was taking a matchbox car out of the package. The blade came dull as hell. I tried touching up the blade with my Lansky turnbox. After 15 minutes I still could slice thru paper. Not only what the blade dull the frame lock was very sticky. I had to hold the frame to the outer position until the blade was almost fully closed. On a few attempts to close the knife, I pushed the frame lock to the open position and would not budge. Safe to say, I am returning this knife and not looking back. $35 Kershaw Scallion is a way better knife all around versus this $120 knife. I will never buy a Maxpedition knife again. :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn:

You're returning a knife you've sharpened? Are you letting the seller know that the knife isn't new anymore?

It's really boring when a new knife comes dull, but I don't see that as a reason for returning it.

Isn't a sticky lock worst to begin with, before it has been broken in?

I guess maybe I'll bust out the lansky deluxe system and have a go at the blade. And maybe your right about the frame lock, but I never experienced a sticky frame lock like this before. This is by far the first really bad experience with a new knife.

I've seen people here writing that graphite from a pencil on the lock can make it less sticky.

Tried with the lansky deluxe system and still can't cut paper. I ran 15 passes on each of the five rods at a 25 degree angle and nothing. Never used a D2 blade before. I guess I'll go thru the process again and see what happens. Anyone have any suggestions?

15 passes per stone is more of a touch up than a resharpen. Try longer on each stone if you're trying to reset the bevel (to match up with your croc sticks).

I would gift that knife to someone I don't like...and get a SMALL Sebenza and be happy for the rest of your life.

I hear that D2 is a pain to sharpen, being a tool steel and all, you might need to be at it a while with a re-profile like that.

I marked the edge of the blade and made some passes. I have a way to go. This blade must have been sharpened at 35 degrees or more on each side. Trying to get it down to 25 degrees for the D2.

I couldn't do that to someone. I am now determined to get a razor sharp edge on this sucker. I must have done over 100 passes withe the extra coarse rod. Getting closer to the edge. Slowly but surely.

I think I just wore out my extra coarse and coarse rods. WOW! D2 is tough. I heard it was a pain as we'll to sharpen, but didn't really know it was this much of a pain. Also heard it holds an edge really well. Hope all is worth it. Well, it's therapeutic.

Got a bunch of D2 knives. Wanna sharpen them good get some DMT stones. They work like a charm. No brittle whet stones.

I tried for another 20 passes. Getting there. Going for another 20 per rod.

You may need to really reevaluate what it truly means to sharpen a knife. Also, when you sharpen a knife, it makes it rally hard to return it, it's rather odd.
There is an entire forum for sharpening discussion, I'd recommend browsing around a little:

Sharpening any steel is a pain when you aren't using the proper equipment and lack patience. ;)

Mark over the edge with some marker and see if when you pass on the stone if it takes all the marker off. If you get it all, you have the bevel set. If just the apex is marked, then you are in for the worst part of sharpening, the little bit of remaining bevel that never seems to go away. If you are hitting only the Alex, then you are going acute of the edge on it.

Marker is as important a sharpening tool as the stones.

I agree with sonny. The small Sebenza is the way to go. I've got two large 21's they're just a little too big, the small is perfect.

That's what I've been doing. I only have the very edge left. Almost there.

I just did a major reprofile on VG-10 today (took it back about 20° inclusive) and the very apex was a pain in the ass to get out. Just stick with it, you will eventually get it! If you think you are getting nowhere, just out marker back on the shoulder you have been grinding to make it feel like you got a lot more done.
