I am boiling things down to this bag for day trips, so far. Anything pos. or neg. to say about the Max. Falcon 2 ? Any better alternate choices for a day bag that I can slide a small forest axe or hawk onto through the webbing ? I don't want to go much larger or smaller.

My ran to small. Once I filled it with hunting gear I had to add the waterbottle holder and I always ran out of space for lunch. Granted I carry alot of gear to be out all day, but I needed more space. Also the waist belt was useless unless you are smurf size. Hits me in middle of the belly and I am 6'0 195lbs. I upgraded to a camelbak trizip and love itlike .

If you run with limited gear it is great and the organization is awesome. I like how the pack fits between your shoulder blades.

go with an osprey...if you fill up a camelbak bladder then the bulge is right against your back with the falcon 2 and you'll end up forcing yourself to drink the water just to relieve that pressure. the waist belt is completely useless - the pack's torso length is way too short so it doesn't help with carrying the weight at all. i wouldn't recommend carrying more than 10 lbs or so with it.

i like the layout/compartments of the pack though.

ditto. it's the worst pack i've ever had.

I bought a clone from Voodoo on Craigslist a few weeks ago and didn't like it either. It looks cool, love the pockets, and durable but it doesn't carry weight well. I'm looking at packs with some sort of frame to help with heavy loads. Something designed to fit well and secure that'll allow me to run and climb.

The fix is to buy a Maxped Proteus waistpack. Then you get a true (properly placed) hip belt and more storage.
The Falcon 2 and the Proteus mate perfectly. I can overnight in this bag now without a problem.

Very interesting.

I got some side views off the Maxpedition site just now. The falcon, Condor etc. look like way more bag than I need for this particular purpose, I already have a larger bag and a small Max Thermite for hip carry. I think that the Falcon Pigmy is the one what I have in mind. I garantee you that the bigger the bag, the more crap I will keep stuffing it with, which would defeat one of my parameters. I do have a concern though in regard to small axe carry. I am 95% sure that a hawk handle with slip down through the PALS webbing, but will the heel of a G.B. Small Forest axe slip in and through on these packs? Thanks for any input.

I picked up a 511 knife pouch and attached it to the side molle. I can carry shooting sticks or my rifle barrel down with that set up. Just grab a few of the large green or red velcro straps at Lowes or Depot and add them to the molle. The hold very well and have multiple uses.

That is it on the right side

The Falcon II is a great pack. The first thing I did was rip the stupid hip belt off, it's worthless and not needed with a load as light as this pack carries.

Being tall and flat sided, the Falcon II is the best for packing a machete or 'hawk on the side.

My prefered vendor doesn't carry the Osprey. I went with the Falcon Pygmy in black. I basicly just want it to lug water, a few tins of sardines and some injury\fire supplies, maybe a small tarp and an extra jacket or vest. Kind of a light weight and small pack if I screw up and have to spend a night without my Batman jammies and bunny slippers. Now I'm wondering about the chest strap, I'm 6'2''\240. Should be ok, I'm not overly fussy. I can always get an extension sewn on at a shoe repair shop or whatever.

For this purpose my choice would be the Camelbak H.A.W.G. I would take Camelbak over Maxped any day of the week.

How exactly did you fix the Proteus to the Falcon? Just by the two compression straps at the bottom of the falcon? What did you do with the handle on top of the Proteus? It doesnt look detachable. Nor do the buckles on the Proteus. Thanks!

I was looking at the Falcon II for a while but after some research I decided on the Eberlestock Little Brother. It's slightly bigger and more expensive than the falcon II and doesn't come with a hip belt. I just got mine a couple days ago along with a hip belt and aluminum frame made to fit inside it and once cinched up it feels great. I loaded it with as many full water bottles as I could fit inside to test it's comfort while loaded down. Walked around with it for a while, added about 50 pounds to my weight when I stood on the scale. Haven't tested it out in the field yet but so far it looks quite promising.
It also has molle and compression straps that would be perfect for your axe or hawk.

Those military style packs kinda suck for backpacking. They are designed to be modular and fit the needs of the soldier that spends most his time in a vehicle. Look to backpacking packs if you actually intend to carry the pack. You want the load to sit close to your back and a little high, those millitary packs put the load too far from your back. You want very wide hip belts to transfer the weight to your hips. You want to be able to adjust the length of the back and width of the shoulder straps.

I'm the same size and the straps on my Falcon II fit me fine. (Except the waist strap... the torso length on the Falcon II is WAY too short for me, making the waist strap useless.)

Thats good idea, I just might have to pick one of those waist packs up.

Not much of a concern for a dayhike pack weighing 20 lbs or so. The backpacker bags tend to be one or two big pouches, and almost all take for granted you will be using a water bladder. I love having compartments for different gear. I have walked a long way with a cheap school bag style pack with 20 or 30 pounds in it and no waist or sternum strap.
