I'm not interested in a pac, or shoulder bag. I'm most interested in something more like a briefcase or duffle. It looks like the proteus versipak is what I might want. I want it for gear mostly. maybe a book or two and maybe a couple of articles of clothing.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

The Proteus is a good bag, but it's designed for hand-carry or use as a fanny pack. It doesn't have quite the size needed to be a briefcase or duffle. You might want to check out the Maxpedition MPB. It has more of a briefcase look to it than the other Maxpedition products but still carries the tactical look. As you can see, the shoulder strap is detachable so you can carry it via the handle.

My buddy just got a MPB a few weeks back, and it is hands down the coolest breifcase/laptop bag I've ever handled. Seriously, this thing is awesome! Completely over built, pockets/pouches/ etc are all very intellegently laid out, just a top notch bag all the way around. It's make a great range bag too, if you wanted it to do double duty.

This is so timely - I am looking for a new "walk-from-the-car-to-the-office" bag to carry the daily esential items PLUS the office items and this bag just might be it!

How comfy is the shoulder carrying option? It looks decent enough. Also, how "tactical" does it look - could it pass as a "boring" laptop bag in a corp office?

Thanks for the feedback and does anyone know where to get one of these babies reasonably priced?

The shoulder carry works fine. There is a thick, removable padding around the strap, with a rubbery surface so it won´t slip off the shoulder. The MPB was my only piece of luggage on a recent 4-day-trip, and thus it was packed pretty tight (and heavy), yet it was always quite comfortable to carry.

Being unfamiliar with corporate offices I cannot really answer the second question, but the only unusual features are the small bags/pockets at the ends, and maybe the flashlight holder, but none of this is all that strange or eye-catching, I would think.

cool, I'm also hoping I can carry it on mass transit without looking to uh tactical.

Dave, I'm not sure there's any Maxpedition you can get that doesn't make you look very tactical. In fact, when given a design choice, it seems to me as if Max will almost often take what looks more tactical over what would seem to work better. And in at least some cases, if you want ot get into a pocket, expect a loud velcro riiiiippp! To me, Max is when you want something tough and you specifically want it to look tactical. If you want something tough and don't want it to look tactical, there's loads of better choices.
