I got the Proteus to eventually attach to a Camelbak Motherlode as a detachable Super BOB, but it is now being employed as the perfect little waist pack for cycling! I can fit my BOB, bike tools, pump, food, extra layer/jacket, knives, multi-tools...! It can even be attached to the handlebars!!! OhManOhManOhMan this thing is GREAT! You can even use it as a drop in organizer for a backpack/ knapsack which takes off the Spec-ops pack rat off my list!

Sorry for the pic quality. I got my pump and a light softshell strapped on the bag using Proteus's own straps...

Easy,

Do you find the maxpedition stuff comfortable for cycling? You have a fat boy too right?
I have been eyeing a proteus and/or fatboy for taking with me on the bike as a smaller and less sweaty alternative to the ol camelbak. Thought I would consult another cyclist before I splurge.

I've got a FatBoy and do a fair bit of mountainbiking. Offroad it tends to slide around a bit as it's designed to rest over the right-rear pants pocket roughly. HOWEVER, the latest versions of the FatBoy has a beltclip which can secure it to a belt to prevent sliding. I tend to use the FatBoy for urban cycling, as in runs to the coffee shop, store, fav reading tree, etc.

For cycling I prefer Timbuk2 Bags they're virtually indestructible, built and designed through use by bike messengers and are very customizable. I recommend the El Ocho or Dee Dog for basic hauling as the Bolo is HUGE.

thanks gargoyle, that is what I wondered. I have a messenger bag (REI brand, timbuktu rip off) and find they are only good if frequent access to the bag is required, hence the design.

For "real" riding a camelbak is a good compromise. I use a rack and panniers for commuting and find its addicting to have tons of storage. When I head out for a ride with only a tube/pump/mini tool and water bottle I fell totally naked.

EasEW, what's the blade/tool between the Strider and the SF?

Nice lookin setup!

I do indeed have the fatboy, but the Neal Stephenson fan(?) beat me to the punch on that one. My sentiments exactly Wiredgargoyle. :)

As far as the Proteus, between the two the Proteus is the better pick due to it goin' around the waist AND you can strap to your handle bars! Something i forgot to mention earlier was that with all my stuff setup as in the picture, I wear it upside down which stabilizes it more. The only drawback to the Proteus for cycling is that you do not have the capacity to carry water with you. If you have WB cages on your bike, then you don't have to worry about it. I would like to see a lumbar pad available for the Proteus, or if anyone knows where to get one, lemme know. Anomad, what kinda riding are you gonna use it for?

I don't recommend Timbuk2 bags to anyone that wants a hard-use messenger bag. When I use a sling bag, I go with the Pac designs 'ultimate'. It has an X-strap feature which effectively makes it as comfortable as a backpack. After usin' a sling bag for work for years, my shoulder is pretty beat-down, so I sprang for the Pac; arguably the best messenger bag available. Chrome, my second pick makes a really nice bag for the money too, and they have backpacks as well. Lifetime warranty too.

If you really want somethin' made to your specs, Look up Reload bags. They're handmade by messengers for messengers, and they'll make it to your specs and whatever odd pockets, colors or design you want. Elle is a bit of a hottie too. :D

Nowadays, I'm usin' a Camelbak Motherlode due to the ability to haul more of my own personal gear with me and 3 liters of water. The organization of the pockets are really nice and it's made really well, although it isn't waterproof. It does have drain holes though. Don't let the online pictures of it fool you, the compression straps make it more compact and stabilizes your stuff. I absolutely love this bag! I can get away with this at work because I only do legal( court filings, etc.) courier work and no longer have to haul crap to ungodly parts of the city... :D

Oh yeah, the thing between the SF(now replaced with an L2!) and the STrider SMF is an Extrema Ratio MPC :)

I mostly ride road, but a lot of road/dirt combo rides are the best routes up here in Fairbanks. I also ride for transportation, but panniers are the way to go for that.

I was thinking these bags might fill a little niche in between just pockets and a hydration packpack. But it sounds like they wouldn't really do anything the gear I have already does.

My GF has a custom PAC designs and uses the hell out of it. I am just not that comfy with a sling bag.

Alaskan road/dirt combos... You got a Kickass GF, dude! Y'all must be HARDCORE. Any Alaskan cycling pics? What Camelbak do you use? I forgot to mention the Camelbak Talon seems like a pretty good pick too.

We're not really hardcore, its just that there aren't all that many paved roads here, so when we want variety its good to throw in some dirt.

I'll contact you with my website, there are a few pictures on there. And, check out www.fairbankscycleclub.org thats my club.

I mostly use 2 different Vaude hydration packs and an ancient Performance rip off, all with platypus bladders. I just found camelbak hawgs on sale for 60 bucks (campmor.com) and am going to give one of those a try. I've had a couple others over the ears, but I really like the Vaude packs.

 Dude, I've never been off-road. Say what you want, until I see pics, Hardcore it is if yer cyclin' in ALASKA without PAVED roads! I'm curious what knife(s) you carry out there, jackets you rock, if you go clipless, etc.! Livin' in Alaska has got to be an awesome excuse for havin' kickass Gear! I had a Vaude like five years ago, and bein' a rookie messenger, snubbed it 'cause it wasn't a sling bag  I owned it for like three days, and have always regretted returning it. I didn't like the yellow rainfly, but I'm kinda anal about colors...

Anomad, sorry I didn't get yer message, My buddy came over and Ghost Recon didn't get turned off 'til now... Hit me up again Tomorrow. I don't get back on the PC 'til around 6:12pmish... :)

EasEWryder,

Very nice set up. I've been going back and forth on getting a Proteus pack for some time. Which vendor did purchase this from? TAD Gear?

Good gear suggestions. We were just talking on CPF about the lack of waterproof backpacks. It looks like messenger bags might be an answer.

Is there anywhere else to shop? ;)
I get stuff from 1SKS too, though.

It's hard for me to throw bucks down for non-waterproof gear, and besides the Maxpedition stuff, the Motherlode and a Backpacking Pack are as far as I can go... I have been tryin' to get some Gaia stuff, but can't seem to find a source for it. Walkin' around with a sling bag(with just my personal gear) for long periods of time, is not comfortable for me, and I heard is not good for the back, that's why I got a Pac, and then the Chrome backpacks.

Samo, you'll love it!

Hi All-

The Maxpedition Proteus pack looks like it might be the most versatile pack the company makes. I've been weighing a purchase back and forth in my head but still remain a bit undecided...having not yet seen it except in pictures.

EasEWryder, do you have any images where you're wearing the pack? The one I've seen on the Internet with the camouflage bag doesn't seem to do it justice. I'd be very appreciative if you could have one of your buds snap a digital picture of it while it's being worn either rightside-up or upside-down.

Oh, I've also read that Maxpedition supplies this pack with clips that prevent the loose straps from flapping around? That would also be a helpful snapshot...

THANKS MUCH!

I'd also like to find a place that sells them where I can hold one and look at them up close.

Anyone know of such a place in the Houston area?

Hi All-

Johnny Z:
Follow http://maxpedition.com/dealer_list.htm to the Maxpedition site and their list of Texas-based retailers.

EasEWryder:
Thanks for the upcoming pictures, that would be an enormous help to folks following this thread. You da' man (YDM). People are all buzzing about the Fatboy, but I think the Proteus has significant day-to-day advantages, especially the fact that it can "blend" a little better and look a bit more discrete. Oh, btw, I noticed the clips that prevent "fly-away straps" in your second picture above.

Regards,

~ Blue Jays ~
