I was thinking about picking one up but was curious to know how comfortable it was to wear in drop-leg configuration. Also, I noticed that the quick release buckle is RH. Can it be swapped for LH? Thanks

Hey Dayuhan,
The Thermite is very comfortable and I wear it while riding a bike. It is not switchable to LH, unless you have a nice sewing machine. I found when I got it, that it was not as far down on my leg as I thought it would be, but have gotten nicely used to it, and actually am glad it isn't as far down as initially hoped for. Hope this helps.:)

EasEWryder,

Thanks for the reply. I'm wondering if anyone has contacted Maxpedtion about a LH version of the Thermite. I carry some..uh.. gear on my right side that would be interfered with if I wore the Thermite RH.

I carry my thermite on my left side, 'cause my messenger bag is setup for right-swing, and would hit the thermite if I have it on my right hip.:)

But wouldn't your quick-release be on your back. I couldn't wear it that way. I'm too paranoid!:p

I'm pretty paranoid, but I'm also not too worried about it, but after typing up three different answers, I realize I have no response. :)

To each his own I guess.:)

Nothing to worry about. You would still have the thigh strap holding the pack to your leg, a method I highly recommend if you are gonna wear it in a drop leg fashion. Just don't try and tightening up the strap too much.

Wow, good thinkin' Tonyccw. I forgot about the leg strap, as I don't use it so it can hang while I pedal. It doesn't interfere with anything or flop around while I ride.

I'm the opposite. I ride a motorcycle, so I need to use the thigh strap to avoid having it flap me to death...

At the risk of betraying my ignorance, I thought thermite was a type of incendiary explosive, not something that would get carried around on a bike.

Shgeo, LOL! I went back and read this thread... Wow, it's like we're terrorists on bikes:eek:

Maxpedition is a hard-use bag company that has a versipak called the "Thermite Versipak". Very durable, useful stuff, and I have no idea why they called it the "Thermite".:)

I go to work, BOOM! A bunch of reponses including a rather amusing question about "Thermite". Yeah, I've wondered how it got it's name but never really gave it much more thought. AnyHoot, I'm sure the legstrap is more than enough to keep it secure but I'd still like a LH model regardless. I've got a little note in the works to send to Maxpedition about making one. I'll prolly send it off this week and I'll let you guys know what Maxpedition says in thier response.

I carry my Thermite on my left side. The QR buckle ends up being above the top left corner of my back pocket. Easy and quite natural to reach. I keep my pocket knife in my right pocket and I didn't want the thermite hampering access.

I tried out the leg strap and was impressed at how it really made the thermite hug my body. However, I don't use it, really. But I will when the weather warms up and I'm jogging in the river bottom area here.

I'm interested in either the 'Fat Boy' or 'Thermit' bags. Do any of you who own one or both also own a Garmin Etrex GPS? I own an Etrex 'Legend' and I'd like to know if the unit will fit into the sheaths that are on these two bags?

Do those of you with the 'Thermite' find that you can fit a lot of gear into it (paracord, radio, knife, food, first aid, etc.)? Or is it a much smaller bag than it appears in the photos? I measured out the dimensions as listed on the site and it seems rather tight.

Finally, if you own both of them, which do you prefer and use more often?

Thank you.

The thermite is a rather small bag; hardly a day back by any standards. A good measurement for the main pouch is a 32oz Nalegne bottle, so you might want to look at the Fatboy, or the waistpouch.

OK guys. Here's the reply I received from Tim Tang at Maxpedition regarding a left handed or ambi Thermite Versipack.

Dear Randy,

Thank you for your support and we are happy to hear
our gear is serving you well.

At this point in time, we do not offer an "ambi"
Thermite so you will have to bear with unbuckling it
from behind when wearing it on your left hip.

We've been getting many requests for a lefty or ambi
model for this pack and we are looking into it for
later this year. I hope to be able to do it though
there's no time set for this product to become
available.

Thanks again for your support and we hope to continue
producing remarkable gear. Take care.

Sincerely,
Tim Tang
MAXPEDITION

Just wanted you guys to know. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!:D

Fatboy. It drapes better across the shoulders and more versatile. The Thermite works best when I'm riding my motorcycle because of the drop leg option.
