I heard recently that Maxpediton has thier gear made over seas. Is this true? Where? I no this is bad, but I go out of my way to buy USA made products.

Is this for only certain things? Pygmy falcon included?

My Maxpedition cellphone pouch is made in Taiwan and about 100 times better than any similar American made pouch I've ever seen.

Not to get into the politics of it, but think about this. If there are two very similar products, one made in America one not. The American made product costs $100 and the non-American costs $75. The non-American product is vastly superior in quality to the American made product. Which do you buy? Do you make yourself feel better by buying American, or do you save money and buy a higher quality product?

I agree with you, I try to buy American as much as possible, but the deciding factors in any purchase are quality and then price. My goal is to get the best possible quality at the best price, where it's made is secondary.

Maxpedition stuff is about as good as it gets, regardless of where it's made you'll like that Pygmy Falcon... get it :).

EDIT TO ADD: If you want very very high quality, American made stuff for good prices, check out Spec Ops gear. I've got a lot of their products and have always been happy.

Maxpedition designs everything in the US. They used to make everything here too, but couldn't make their gear for a competitive price with the quality they want, so they ended up shipping manufacturing to Taiwan.

It's awfully hard to find anything made in the USA anymore, especially things with good quality (except for custom knives and good guns). It's one of the reasons why our economy is doing as badly as it is.

I'm okay with Taiwan, which is a capitalist country. Poisonous Chinese garbage you couldn't pay me to own.

There are a few good pack and gear manufacturers that still produce in the US. Duluth Pack is a great one, and makes almost everything in the US. Incidentally they have good cutting boards as well. http://duluthpack.com/
Filson's also makes some packs and such, though they are more of an apparel company. Not everything is made in the US, but most, and they label everything made in the US as being such, and imported as imported. I like the honesty. http://www.filson.com/home/index.jsp

Not true. It is true that more and more is getting made overseas, and US manufacturing is declining. However, if one is committed, it is quite easy to find US made gear. As for quality, I will stack a coat made by Filson's or a bag made by Duluth, a tool made by Channelock, etc. against ANYTHING made in SE Asia.

Long discussion of course.
I will say that ONE of the reasons that the US economy is doing badly is that people are mostly uninterested in buying from their compatriots. After WWII West Germany had an "Economic Miracle" in largest measure because the entire nation decided to buy from each other whenever possible. That stimulated innovation, reconstruction, investment and jobs. It's often said and frequently ignored that if everyone in the US were to reallocate $20 of monthly spending to exclusively US made goods it would create 4-5 million jobs.

I have a Duluth Pack shell bag, but I hardly ever use it anymore. Not enough organization options in it. Other than that, I haven't looked at the Duluth Pack lineup in years. Perhaps I should go take a peek.

Oooh, my aching wallet .....
