Now, I LOVE my Maxx. I'm not complaining; I knew what "tool steel" meant when I bought it. However, I have a shameful admission to make: I have allowed the knife to rust.

Actually, with all the concern I've read about the blade, that's been the least of my problems. I polished a bit of light rust staining off the blade and called it good. It has since had a fairly heavy rust preventative rubbed into it and as long as I keep it oiled, I don't think it'll be a problem.

No, what has bothered me has been the rust all over the small screws, the pivot and the thumb stud! I don't know why, but I always assumed these would be stainless. Now I have tiny parts coated in rust. I'd like to remove the rust and blue them or something, maybe just coat them with Renaissance Wax or the like, but I can't figure out how to remove the rust first.

I put all these small parts into a small jar of baking soda and put the whole thing in a vibratory tumbler for awhile, hoping that the fine powder would clean the rust out of the small crevices for me. That got nowhere. I just pulled the parts out and they're as rusty as ever.

What do I need to do to rescue my beloved Maxx? Here's what I'm checking online this morning. If Will or someone else can help me out, that'd be great. I realize there's not likely to be a lot of traffic here on Thanksgiving morning, of course.

1. Can I find the exact same pieces, but in stainless? If I do, is there any drawback to doing that? I'm assuming Camillus passed on the stainless option to save a buck, but is there a compelling reason other than that? I'm also not sure where or how to find such parts. And that won't help with the thumb stud or the pivot, as I imagine those are Camillus-specific parts.

2. What would Camillus or DDR charge me to clean up or replace these parts?

. . . . and yes, I admit I'm daunted at the prospect of working with such tiny parts. I just don't see how I can get all the rust.

I've carried my Maxx pretty regularily, and have never seen any rust. Were you carrying it IWB? I carry mine in my pocket hand have had no trouble.

Sir,
Please call Camillus Monday 800.344.0456 and ask Wendy how and where to return the knife.
Camillus will replace the fitting with new stainless steel parts.

As for the blade I cannot speak to that part of the knife. The other part will be repaired for you .

Whoops. . . I haven't checked back in awhile. In the meantime I've cleaned it up as best I could. The blade is just about right; I can polish a large, flat surface without ruining anything.

I will call Wendy and see what she says. Thanks!

I think I must have gotten some moisture into it somehow before I put it away; it was on the dresser for a fairly long stretch at the beginning of the school year. I carry almost exclusively in the pocket.
Great knife, though. Having it apart was a good excuse to clean it and add graphite to the pivot area, and the fitting is great. It went back together as smooth and tight as can be.

I love the internet. Get a little rust on your knife, just post a message. Darrel Ralph will come right back and tell you what to do, and he won't even say "Why the hell didn't you just call Camillus, dimwit?"

Still have not called Wendy, but I just found an email reply from a "Maureen Drake" in my Junk folder. Still not sure what happened with my junk controls, but I missed more than one important message. The quoted section is Maureen's reply; my original message is below it. Note that Camillus is apparently willing to treat rust on a knife as a warranty issue! I call that fantastic service far beyond what is called for, considering that about a third of this knife is made out of, you know, steel, which is, after all, ferrous metal. I had no thought in my head of warranty repair; I just wanted to pay them for some new screws and such. Maybe I'm easy, but I'm VERY impressed. To be offered warranty service after I allowed my favorite knife to rust is above and beyond the call.

Dear Mr. Gwinn,

I am sorry you are having trouble with your CUDA knife. If you send me your
knife, I will send it to the repair department to have the rust removed and
new screws and such installed. This will be covered under warranty. Please
send your knife to: Camillus Cutlery Co. 54 Main St. Camillus, NY 13031.
Also please keep in mind that the turnaround time is approx. 3-4 weeks. You
will need to include a copy of this email or a note stating your address and
phone number. If I can be of further assistance please feel free to contact
me.

Sincerely,

Maureen Drake

Subject: Replace small parts on a Cuda MAXX 5.5?

Hi. . . . I have allowed the small screws, pivot, and thumb stud on a
Cuda MAXX 5.5 to rust. I've been trying to clean up the rust ever
since, but these things are tiny. I'm beginning to think it makes more
sense to get new parts and protect them somehow. . . by bluing,
Renaissance Wax, or the like.

Are these parts available from Camillus? If so, what would be the
charge? If not, do you have any helpful suggestions on cleaning the
parts I have? I can't figure out what to do about such tiny parts.

Oh, and thanks for making the MAXX. It's by far the coolest factory
knife I've ever owned.

Camillus, as with many companies, will do what they can to make things right. Although, I have to admit, taking care of rust under warranty is a new one to me.
