Maxx Tip Up Conversion?

Just got my Cuda Maxx from Discount Knives. It's every thing that I hoped for, sharp, well-made, and large. The only problem is I am a tip-up kind of guy. Can any one recommend a person who could convert the clip to tip-up carry?

Best regards,

Argyll

Argyll, I am generally a tip-down type, but I have and carry a number of tip-up knives, so I am not terribly biased either way except to say that I cannot really see carrying a blade that large in tip-up. It seems to be just asking for trouble unless you have some manner of assuring that the little opening wings on the base of the blade won't catch on anything and start the blade to opening in your pocket.

I kind of like tip up, and have seen some other people asking this question (damn the no more search) but haven't seen anybody actually do it.If you do have this done somehow (a machine shop I assume) let us know what the end result is.
Also if you haven't already tried it, the little flipper/guards will act like the Wave on the Emerson Commander and open the knife as you draw it out of your pocket if carried in the tip-up position.

Are the original Ralph Maxx's tip up or tip down or is there an option? I'm a tip up kinda guy as well but I'm not sure that the CUDA Maxx would be either fast or safe to draw. I usually carry inside the waist band so drawing a knife with "flippers" is a bit more difficult than it would be in pocket clip carry mode.

Darrel does his knives tip down. He is not a fan of tip up. That being said, the Aftermath and the StaticMax are being released with the frame drilled and tapped for either tip up or tip down. Darrel does listen to what his customers ask for.:)

If you are not averse to doing it your self, knifekits.com has taps, drill bits, clips, etc. for reasonable prices. I made one of the DDR 2's and mounted the clip for tip up carry. Works just fine, just be careful with the tap. I broke mine into several pieces because I didn't use enough lube(first time doing it). Practice on an old beater knife, or some scrap metal. Hope this helps.

Fellow forumite Dirk (see two posts up ^) was kind enough to take on the job. After kicking around a couple of options, he reconfigured the factory clip to allow it to be positioned a little closer to the butt end in the tip-up configuration. Thanks Dirk for a job well done. Now the knife is just the way I wanted it.

Best regards,

Argyll

Cool, so how does it work? Does it open with the wave/flipper on the pants pocket or are you still using the flippers manually? Any pics (I know its a pain in the a$$ if you are not setup to do it)?

I'm glad you are pleased! It worked out pretty well. There was a minor hitch. That was the fact that the screws used on the clip are not a standard size. After Argyll decided to have me use a more standard 2/56 screw, instead of utilizing the screws that came with it, there was no problem.

Logan5, I tried to e-mail a scan of the finished knife. Did it get through?

I'd be careful if you're going to use it tip up. Keep the spine of the blade to the seams of your pocket, and I'd avoid clipping it to the belt.
Liner locks and Frame locks don't have much blade retention, and it's more prone to accidental openings.

I know that I posted earlier in this thread that I was somewhat neutral about tip up/tip down carry. Well, no longer. I had a Spyderco Salsa which is made to carry tip up only come open in my pocket and I was most disconcerted by it (I now keep the pivot screw fairly tight). Looking at my CUDA MAXX 5.5 and thinking about the Gibbs MAXX that I am putting on order, I would no more want either of them tip up that I would want a switchblade without a safety lock on it and for the same reasons. The ears are all to likely to catch on your pocket on the way out and to do what it is that they are supposed to do, start the blade to opening. With a blade that large, it is too easy for inertia to take control of the situation at that point.

I would note that both Darryl Ralph and Will Fennell have posted at one time or another that they do not believe it a good idea to make the MAXX 5.5 in tip up form for just that reason.
