I thought I would start a thread for making plans for our Gathering, please add your ideas!

Swap Meet
$20 Kit Contest
Fishing
Eating!!! :D

Let`s see some more ideas! (Now I`ve got to hope I can get the car that day)

Hi John -

I will bring some meat to grill for everyone, plates, utensils, condiments etc.

We could have a fishing contest, using a survival fishing kit that the gathering attendee brings, and they could use items from their $20 kit.

Anther idea was to have a contest for supporters that cannot make the event, maybe closest guess to the weight of the largest fish in the fishing contest.

I have some prizes I will donate to the contests.

Hi guys -

Bumping this back up to the top.

I have been looking at the park district rules for that little park near me. Apparently, even though I live in the park district proper, residents of my "private lake community" have to pay extra to fish at the Hollis park district lake, because we have our own private lakes. Harumph.

Either way, we will still have fun. I have two lakes, one is over 80 acres and the other is around 60 acres, so fishing we can do here if we want.

I also have a good sized yard and patio, and there are woods nearby.

I still like the idea of a timed fishing derby where gathering attendees must use their kit supplies, and the most/big fish will win a prize. Then, for the folks who cannot make the event could guess at the size of the big fish would win a prize as well.

If we do this at my house, I will have a grill here and a picnic table, chairs etc.

I really like the fishing contest idea, even though I pretty much suck at fishing.

I`ve got a question. Is the survival fishing kit supposed to be part of the $20 kit? Or is it just one we have made up for ourselves? This is from the original post from outdoorsfan as to what the $20 kit should cover. No mention of food gathering supplies.

The idea is to put together a survival kit that costs no more than $20 total. The kits would be evaluated on how well they met the needs of the following areas:

Fire
Shelter
Signaling
First Aid
Tools
Repair
A container, bag, etc.

Hi John -

I guess he did not say anything about food or fishing kits.

Maybe make up a fishing kit that can be carried in your survival kit?

Open to ideas here.

Let`s decide on a size limit, Altoids Tin, Mini Altoids tin, smaller, larger? You guys pick a size. Less than 4 weeks away!

Hi Guys -

Ok - how about a standard sized altoids tin and whatever you can fit inside.
No spending limit, but you'll have to make your pole out of on-hand materials.
We'll trek into the woods to get your fishin' stick, and then go to the lake to fish.

You have to use a JK knife to prepare your stick if you choose to use a stick.

Help me out here guys - anyone have some more ideas?

Hi John -

Of course I'll have a cooler with "barley-pops" in it. :^)

I would say if it doesn't fit in an Altoids tin, it's a fishing kit not a "survival" fishing kit. The only exception should be the approval of the Popeil Pocket Fisherman. If you have one, use it because those are way to cool, in a campy way, not to be OK!

Is it ok if it`s not an Altoids tin, but something else with the same size capacity, or less?

Hi John - Sure, about the same size as a large altoids tin. Sounds good to me.

Made the prize knife for the $20 Survival Kit Contest this morning!

Excellent! I'll have a prize for big fish for one person who attends, and also one JK Supporter that cannot make the event.

I'll post a contest thread here in the JK forum for JK Supporters to guess the length of the largest fish caught in the gathering fishing contest.
