nice, but should have made it the longer blade version. nickel silver and s30v is a nice addition to the standard version.

I know that they can be useful, but rubberized handles just really turn me off. I'm gonna have to pass on this one. Looks like it would be great for hunting though.

I like it.
Not sure about the rubber tho.
If the handle was wood, maybe ebony, with that nickel silver guard ........ it would probably also cost more.
I'll beat it would be a sweet user.
Vanguards are always cool.
I'll probably end up getting one......, I doubt they will sell out fast. that means it will torture me until:rolleyes:

I have a wood handled version, and missed out on the Alaskan Guide. Well, I never pulled the trigger at least... I figured this would be a good substitute
You can still get the AG Vanguard. It's about the same money as this tho.
But sometimes they have a sale. I picked mine up before Christmas for about 20% off.

I've had a couple knives with rubber handles, the last was/is a Buck 470.
Even when not used/carried, exposed to UV, wide temperature extremes, and kept in the dark, the handle deteriorated rather rapidly.
I hope they changed the rubber formulation to address that issue.

"Someday" I might get around to replacing the handle on my 470. In the mean time, I have other fixed blades I can use. :)
(truth to tell, I find the 470's blade a bit longer than I like for skinning and gutting a critter.)

I waited too long. Was ready right when they had sold out and had not replenished. By the time they were back, I was on to other things. This one just spoke to me, so I’ll finally have a BOTM that I truly enjoy

Once again, meh.

Rubber handled Vanguard, hmm, seen those before somewhere. The s30v is nice, the silver nickel is nice but it isn't worth $125 to me. I have some nice Vanguards with all kinds of neat handle material; elk, ram's horn, buffalo horn, burl, etc. BUT rubber? No way.

January was their only BOTM I bought this year, February was just an overpriced 55 and it has been downhill from there.

They need to up their game

they switched to a cerakoted blade instead of the titanium nitride or whatever that coating was. I prefer the old coating. nothing wrong with the cerokote, but just like the other coating better.

Nice. Finally one I can get behind. And not much more than the regular off the shelf versions.
I went ahead and placed my order. Excited to see it.
This is a great user knife. I much prefer the rubberized handle over the wood for a user and in S30V . I do really like the nickel/silver guard and pommel.

They changed the AG coating?.
Huh.
Maybe I won't take it hunting as planned.
I sorta liked that coating.
Seems like the CaraKote wouldn't be as slippery during use.
I think I'd prefer this BOM knife over a new AG one.
Hmm. Thanks.

Maybe I'll just stick with my Open Season S30v and stash the AG.

Changing the AG coating would be a crime, I need confirmation.

Not sure what to do here. I almost never carry a fixed blade or use one (so why do I have so many ). The one I do have with me daily, that sits perched and ready in the center console of my truck is the rubber handled Vanguard. I have two others, wood handle and AG models. It is one of my favorite patterns.

This will make a good user at a good price I think.

Tic toc, Tic toc

cabelas site either isnt updated to show new stuff yet and they got some old stock still available. bass has both available but for how long who knows.

should be said that the cerakote is a good product hard and smooth. should work fine as a working knife. I just like the old coating for its not quite black sheen and smoothness etc.

should also say I assume new stuff will all be cerakoted rather than titanium aluminum nitrates or whatever the older coating was. so best to buy while still around of ya like the older coating.

I like the overall look, but the rubber handle is a no go for me. If this knife had ebony or another nice wood handle I would have gotten two because I like the blade steel and nickel silver!

Thanks jb, I appreciate the extra effort. I have points to spend and most probably will...

I broke on this one too though. In the end, it was the look with the nickle silver bolsters and S30V steel that tipped the scale.
