But i have to try and turn crappy knives into somewhat good knives. Seeing as im not QUITE 18 its all i have to work with . Im talkin the trash thats usually sold at liquor stores. What ive found that helps a little is taking the knife and filling down the entirely flat edge into somewhat of an edge, then using a common kitchen Crock Stick sharpener to get a nice edge... anyone have any tips?

- I pray for the day when >18 can buy a REAL knife (so long as they arent stupid enough to cut off any digits) -:D

As myself not being 18 yet, I've tried to make crappy knives into decent ones but, I usually end up with a mess except for thisone I made from an old butcher knife.

I call it the Modern Nessmuk.

Get your parents or an adult to buy you a good one, or make some yourself. Steel is the least expensive item in most knives.

thats how i started out, with cheap knives and stainless steel was the worst to sharpen.
i have filed many a knife to get an edge i could work with.
sometimes it's your only choice with a cheap blade is to re-profile the edge with a file.

old lawn mower blades can be made into a knife.
you already have a file you're half way there.

Force your parents to order them for you  ;)

Talk to your parents, they should be ok with you owning an sak or something.
Demonstrate responsible knife use with an sak, and more knives will follow:thumbup:

That may be true if i didnt live in CA. You have no idea the paranoid f**kheads that live in this baby-proofed state. you cant even buy a KNIFE SHARPENER here. i tried. and, my grandmother (who i live with) chopped off a finger when she was a cook, so that essentially f**ks me. Thanks though

Get some older friends to buy them for you. If that doesn't work, I recommend finding a friend with a CC who can purchase what you want on the Internet. Even better, some websites accept money orders.

One simple word that solved all my problems..INTERNET =D
I'm not sure if they were supposed to process my orders back then, but NGK is STILL my premier dealer

Don't you mean "<18"? because if you are ">18" you can buy a knife. Sorry, I just couldn't help it.

Sorry to hear about your families paranoia, but fear not, not everyone in this state is f'ed up, most, but not all. I don't know how much trouble it would get you in, but you could, in a polite way, point out there hipocrisy if they won't let you have a knife but they let you use a steak knife at dinner, or if they ever let you help cook. Also it may help if they know that you are interested in something like a Victorinox swiss army knife or a Case peanut and not a 12" bowie.

If all else fails, GARAGE SALES are your friend. You can usually find a few old carbon steel kitchen knives that are great knives that will most likely be already patinaned. An old parring knife after a little tlc would make a great everyday utility knife. I used to love it when I would get dragged to garage sales, because I usually found a good deal on some fishing gear or I would find an old patina'd knife that would sharpen up easily and would perform just as well if not better than my friends' fancy and expensive Bucks and Schrades.

Also, if you do go the internet route do yourself a favor and order a mora #711-G or #510 from http://www.ragweedforge.com/SwedishKnifeCatalog.html . It will be the best $9-$12 you ever spent.

Actually, seeing as i have surgery in about 10 days, i went out and got myself a diamond edge file, a crowbar with a good 12 inch flat span, and a grind stone. I figure in about a month or two i will have a nice knife. Of course, the garage sale idea is great (the internet idea has its flaws, because they can ask for someone >18 to sign for it >.<), so i might try that one later.

Thanks all!
