Anybody out there know how to archive emails on to a CD from Outlook Express other than using Outlook ????? I think there are archiving programs available but, sadly, I am computer illiterate.

My computer is completely bogged down at this point and I need to clear it. I have over 17,000 emails along with thousands of attachments swamping my system.

First one to successfully assist me in archiving these emails will get a FREE Skeleton Key!!!!!!

Send Help!!!

Jerry

The most simple plan is to just drag them out of your Outlook folders into a folder on some removable media like a CD, or, again, a hard drive on a server somewhere.

Click on the message (or hold down the Shift key and click the first and last messages you want to archive), then drag them on top of your rewriteable CD drive.

Try this.
Put a blank cd in your read/ write drive.
Try opening two windows on your screen the first, open my computer, bouble click on your read/wrtie cd. resize it so ti takes up the left half of your screen. The second window, resize so it takes up the right half of the screen. In the right window, click on the first email that you want to archive, then scroll down to the last one and hold the shift key down and click on the last email. This should highlight all of them. The just click and drag the whole shootin match over into the left window and drop it to write it onto the blank cd.

Right click the start button, and left click on explore. Go to the folder c:\windows\application data\identities\{3...}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\ to see all the folders. They should have a dbx extension. You should be able to take all of these folders/files and burn them to one or more cd roms.

I wish I could be more specific, but I would need to know more about your system. I hope that helps.

I don't expect that to be nearly enough to win a knife, but I'd be glad to help more. If, in the event, I do win a knife, please donate it to someone in the military. Thanks.

Yeah, but it took 15 minutes for him to get the first response. I think I'm going to write a script that watches BFC for any posts by Jerry, then sends me a text message on my cell phone telling me to check the forum.

I think that would be a good investment of my time. Or a script that automatically sends the email "I'll take one of each" to Bussesales any time he posts. I'll call it Porkrustler Express.

I think 1whoOinks has the patent on that one!

for archiving purposes you need to go out and get an external DVD+RW drive. USB 2.0 or firewire will do. They can hold 4.7 - 9.5 gb of data depending on what size DVD you purchase. In outlook you can setup an extra folder to archive data to and just point that folder to the dvd drive. Piece of cake. I recently setup a solution similar for a Geophysicist here in the oil business.

Jerry, Fly me out to the computer... you will need my special expertise to help you do this while we drink CBL together and talk about sharp objects... I am at your disposal.

Your emails are normally saved in files buried inside WINDOWS, but you can change this so that they are saved along with your data in the folder called My Documents. In Outlook Express click on Tools > Options > Maintenance > Store Folder... and enter the name of the folder, e.g. C:\My Documents\email
Then when you back up My Documents, it will include all your emails.
Now you can backup the whole My Documents folder or just the Email folder. Then just burn the folder onto a cd or floppy by opening up the program you use. Once it's open click File > Open,
Select c: > My documents > Email, then start burning the cd, or just copy C:\My Documents\email into the address link to be opened.

Jerry,
I'm driving through Ohio tomorrow... I could always stop by and get you straightened out...:D ;)

I am a Teaching Assistant in college and write manus for programs in work, here is a manu :D :

Huh's Killer Manu to Get The Skeleton Key

Follow the instructions below:

1. How to go to the right directory?

1.1 Run OutlookExpress, go to "tools"-->"Options" and open a new window of options.

1.2 Click "Maintenance" button on the upper right conor of the new window and then click on button "Store Folder..." to open another very small window.

1.3 In the middle of the newly opened window, it is the directory info of your email boxes. Copy the whole information by selecting them and press "Ctrl-C". Now we have the directory info of your email files.

2. How to store the email files onto the CD?

2.1 Go to "My Computer" and paste the directory info in the address bay and go to the directory.

2.2 You will see several ".dbx" files with different names. Normally they won't be very big. (no more than 600M, I believe).

2.3 Burn those files onto a CD with CD burner softwares, I strongly recommend this software (www.nero.com). follow the instructions of the burner software.

3. How to read the burned email files?

3.1 Find the right file! the files have different names, but you can find the folder names on these files. For example, your inbox file might be "jerry.busse.com-Inbox.dbx"

3.2 If you don't have a software to open .dbx files, just double click on the file and it will popup a window asking what you want to do for this type of file.

3.3 Select "Select the program from a list" and click "OK", this will pop up a new window for you to select programs.

3.4 Click "Browse" and go to you outlook express program directory, which normally will be "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\" and select "msimn.exe".

3.5 When you go back to the previous window, check the option "Always use the selected program to open this type of file" and click "OK"

4. We are done!

Jerry,

I feel your pain. I have a solution.

I think, given that your real talents lie in the medium of steel, realized via artful grinding, that you should give up on the computer. I believe that it has become a distraction and must be isolated and possibly destroyed. Please leave the computer in the able hands Blade Babe or Shaggi. In an attempt to make the trasition/weening easier, I propose that you remove yourself completely from the vacinity of said evil computer. I think that it is best for you to isolate yourself as far from the malicious machine as possible without actually leaving the country. With that in mind, I propose that you pack up the grinder, a metric ton or two of INFI, plenty of micarta and move, temporarily of course, to my location in interior Alaska. I will make sure you stay well fed and and that a continuous order flow is maintained by staying in contact with the shop in Ohio. By eliminating all the external distractions of the computer, employees, phone calls, etc, I figure your productivity will increase by at least two-fold. This situation should prove to be benficial to everyone. Jerry has no more computer headaches, customers get their orders sooner, BB and Shaggi no longer have to field phone calls for Jerry or trip over him in the shop, Jennifer no longer has to put up with him drinking in the shop and harrassing her rats, and I will exact my own personal "facilitator fee".

Girls, just let me know when you are pouring him on the plane. Oh, Jerry, no need to bring the SK with you. We'll work out the payment when you arrive.

All you guys (and girls) that know how to do this stuff really SUCK!

I can fly planes, helicopters, run, ride and/or operate just about anything with an engine (or engines) on it including large passenger vessels (and tow); SCUBA dive, parachute, operate things that go "bang" or even "click-clack-thush" with demonstrable results a respectable distance away, track/follow, E&E, read, write, belch, fart, know which silverware to place where and what to use in which order, make martinis the right way, drop names (and the nameless) tell jokes, crack knuckles (and ankles and shoulders and lower back and toes and ...) and a variety of other things that make for an intriguing resume' but I am like a complete moron with this computer $h*t.

Yesterday morning I went though the periodic displeasure of ordering a new notebook computer. All BS aside, I did not know what half the stuff was let alone what it's supposed to do. Once it arrives, I know I will consume much Bombay Saffire or Tennessee whiskey just getting the email and ISP settings done.

It's good to know we have you guys who posted above available and hopefully willing to help me ... even if you do all suck!:D
