Wouldn't you know it. About a week after selling my 806D2, Benchmade goes and discontinues them.
So I went to everyone's favorite drugstore (newgraham) with every intention of getting a new 806D2, but just in case I also had them set aside a 710HS for me.
I have handled and compared a 710 to other knives many times, and each time chose something else. This time, this knife really spoke to me.
* The G10 felt grippy and comfortable at the same time.
* The action of the axis lock was better than any I have handled, and it came that way right from the factory.
* The grinds were perfectly even.
* The new version of BM's black coating is a little bumpy and feels nice. I have discovered it is also less prone to scratching - I cut up some cardboard and it left no marks the way the old BT would.
* The shape of the blade is downright sexy with its curves and it certainly does not hurt that the factory edge is sharp enough to "tree top" arm hairs.
* I can not find a flaw in the fit/finish anywhere.
I really like this knife!
My journey to find just the right large folder may be complete. I have owned an Al Mar SERE 2000, two Spyderco Militarys, a Benchmade 806SD2 and of course the 806D2. This 710HS is by far my favorite. It's not even close.
Is my 710HS a rival for my Sebenza? No, they compliment each other! They are very different knives that I think go together very nicely, along with a smaller gent's knife, to make a great combination.
Hopefully Benchmade won't go and discontinue the 710 now.
I look forward to doing the 1 year review on this one. Time to go find some more things to cut.
