Her name is "Barkley" so named by my son when he was 6yrs old and we brought her home.
Odd looking cutie of a mixed breed she is Queensland Heeler (sp) and Basset.
She has been an excellant companion and guardian of my shop entrance for 12+ yrs, great alarm system for passerbys and stray cats! Always has greeted me with a wagging tail and a big old Doggie kiss on the cheek every day. Early last week she started puking up water and sluggish not her normal energetic self.
Take her to the vet and find she has a irritated stomach and intestine and is not passing food. We have an great vet who really cares and runs a bunch of tests, Xrays and an endoscopy to poke around. Around $900 later we have a conclusive diagnosis, Although this took five days for lab results Etc to get back.
Meantime she is suffering and I am in agony as I watch and can do nothing for her, except comfort her.

Tell the vet I am tapped out $ wise and She does all the further Visits, shots, special food and medications for $5 ea and no charge for kennel stays or
Vet fees. Vet has called me everyday to check on her progress and help guide in hopefully her recovery.

Glad to say last night she ate some food and kept it down, most in the past seven days. We are cautiously optimistic as she continues to have difficulty breathing and is finally actually doing a doggy nap for a few hours at a time.

We ask for your Thoughts and Prayers and will keep you posted on her progress.
BTW Barkley says Thanks!

Robert,

I feel for you, your family and Barkley. My wife has a similar mixed breed. Different breeds mixed up, but Tot is an awesome dog that has always been a sweet companion and an awesome watchdog. She's around 13 years old and her eyes are clouding like Barkley's It's sad to see a dog once so full of lif efading as they get older.

Best thoughts sent for Barkley and your family.

Yep we sure get attached to these four legged critters, I hope yours gets better.
Our lab is just now 18 months, I took him out Monday morning and was throwing the dreaded black ball around, this dog will do anything to play with this black ball, anyway I gave it a good throw, Gus ran and got it, came back and laid down. I knew something was wrong, so I picked up the ball and threw it again and he just laid there. He laid his head down, his eyes rolled up in his head and his breathing went very shallow, I figured his heart was bad and he was about to go. Anyway I yelled at him to get up, grabbed his collar and raised him to his feet and said lets go, he staggered around a little but finally got his barring and started to pert back up. This was before the vets office was open so at 9 I loaded him up and hauled him to the vet, he checked him out and said everyting looks and sounds good, he said that some dogs for no reason will have a seizure and he figured thats what happened. He's back to his old ways, so I guess he's alright, vet said just keep an eye on him and if it happens again, he'd need to see him as soon as possible.

I hope everything goes well. I got three dogs and always will. They are 9, 6 and 2 years of age. My home wouldn't be the same without them.

I hope that pup pulls through this. Our dog friends help us to stay sane, they help us to maintain a sence of humor and teach us that anyday, can be a great day, just laying in the sun, soaking up the rays.

I hope Barkley continues toward recovery.
We lost our 16 year old Beagle last October and it was too hard to take for me being at home all day. My wife brought home a surprise pup in December...and yes that pup runs my life during the day now.

Thats tough, been there a time or two before and its tough to feel much worse than you do when one of your buddies is suffering. Sounds like you have a great vet on your side though and a dog thats still fighting. I'll keep you guys in my thoughts and hope it all works out.

I am saddened by your loss, Robert. :( Dog's are very special in their family's life. The memories of what she gave to the family will always be precious. RIP, Barkley.

Bill, I hope your pup will be ok. I'm sure it must have freaked you out.

Robert, thats to bad, I'm sorry. Like I said before we sure get attached to these critters. But think of it this way, at least you had a good dog for many years and that her suffering is over. Its hard to put a dog down and she spared you that heart tearing decision. I had 2 dogs get hit by cars when I was a kid and I had to shoot both of them to put them out of their suffering. But it was either wait several hours both times until my dad got home from work or end the suffering myself, and I just couldn't think about letting either of them suffer thst long..

Fitz yes it did, I figured for sure I was going to have to bury OL Gus, and I'm getting to old for those kind of stessful situations and I didn't want to lose another friend so soon. Thats why I made him get up, hoping he'd fight harder to live. He's got the best personality I've ever seen in a dog, he loves every body and will absolutely go crazy until you go say hello to him, then he settles right down.

If your going to get another dog Robert, don't wait, get one right away, it will help.

Bill

I'm so sorry! Our 4-legged pals become a part of us and we hate to see them suffer. Take care and savor the memories. I've had cancer take a couple of my pals in the past. Just went through a rough period with my 12 year old buddy but he is getting better.

Always thought myself to be the tough guy of sorts...
Have lost friends and associates to some insane situations (Mostly their fault) but this hit close to home. My dog has taught me more about caring for a true friend far more than another human could have.

I raised beagles for a lot of years and buried many of them out hear on the hill next to the kennel. I would dig the hole, lay my friend down and place a piece of rabbit fur a few inches ahead of their nose. I figured that way they would always be in the chase, doing what they loved to do.
Happy trails to you Barkley. Fred

man I'm sorry to hear this too.
I didn't see it posted
I had to put MY 12 year old Peggie down some time ago she had a brain tumor
and was convolting a lot that tore me up, I couldn't keep seeing her sufer.. I just couldn't replace her
not even sure if I could now, they say it help...:(

Thats a real bummer Blinker.I lost a Good ol' Beagle a while back ( I buried quite a few of those too Fred R. ) IMHO IG & B.B.have the best answer . You'll never forget an old friend but a new one will make the passing easier . Sorry Buddy ( BTW that was my old Beagle's name,Buddy )

Sorry to hear about your four legged buddy. We are in a similar situation now. Our family pet dog has developed sarcoma between her eyes and has eaten into the sinus cavity. Won't be very long we figure and my wife is not taking it very well.

Sorry for your loss, try to remember the good times with Barkley and get a new dog soon. The house will have that "new puppy smell" and you'll be too
busy to be sad for long.
